So for the past 10 years I've been having persistent depressive episodes. Tried SSRIs with limited success, as well as several benzos for the anxiety/insomnia. The last antidepressant I started was Effexor, and for the first 6 months it worked a treat. I did, however relapse twice, and with the relapses, a dose increase. Two weeks ago I sunk into one of the most intense lows I've experienced in years. My doc suggested I try combining quetiapine rbx 50mg with a higher dose of Effexor, and so far it seems to really have boosted my mood. I'm no stranger to quetiapine as I was given a sample pack a while ago for panic attacks. Strange, because I was on 25mgs back then and I remember getting knocked the f*** out every time. This time, however, they seem to have no impact in terms of drowsiness. I do sleep like a baby on them, but can stay awake if I have to with no issues. Just wondering why it would be so different this time around? Could it be the Effexor kind of levelling out the sedation? I have a friend with bp2 and she used to wake up with her eyes glued shut on the same dose as me. Just curious to see if anybody else with treatment resistant depression has used augmentation therapy with an antipsychotic and what experiences you had.

I've used risperidone for years to augment Effexor and Celexa. It works really well for me. I also take quitiepine for anxiety, and while I sleep really well on it, I also take it during the day and it doesn't make me sleepy. It did knock me out at first, but now, it's fine. I think I adjusted to it.
