My main, recurrent problem is with hyper-irritability. It ruins many of my days.

I'm not on any prescription meds or herbal remedies. I limit my caffeine intake to 12 ounces of soda pop a day.

I would prefer to find a natural remedy, such as herbal, but would consider a prescription drug (but I have no physician and would have to find one).

Any ideas?

xanax... klonopins... any kind of benzo... when I didn't take them I am extremely irritable and always getting in trouble... Just be careful.. take ONLY as needed.. not every day like I did because now I find myself very dependent on them... not only mentally but physically... I find these pills to be pretty bittersweet because of the addiction... but they DO work. They are the only thing that has ever worked for me.

Thanks for the info, v214k. I've never tried the drugs you mentioned and knew nothing about them. I'll do a little research into them before contacting a doctor.

Have you tried " Kava-Ka"? This is an herb which helps with calming down; it takes the edge off when one is stressed; it also helps with calming for sleep. Most Herbal stores should have it it comes in a green lable and dark brown bottle. It does work; God Bless, JG+

I would suggest looking into Valerian Root - you can purchase it at Wal-mart... and we have talked about it in the review section.

Yeah i had a lot of the same problems you did. and i found it relaxes me a lot... when i dont take the medications. ive even successfully weaned off of xanax for a while so i was back to my "normal self" and i was just like homicidal and angry and wanting to kill everyone. it was pretty bad but i was so angry. everything pissed me off.. hten i stated taking the xanax again and i'm lot more level headed, that's for sure.

Thanks again to v214k for the additional insight. Xanax looks sort of scary, and the info I saw said that maybe you shouldn't take it if you're depressed (which I am). But it could still turn out to be the right thing.

Jerimiahgirl, I will look into Kava-ka. Glad to be pointed in that direction.

Rhapsody, I did try Valerian, years ago. It definitely works as a muscle relaxant, but it did not seem to affect my irritability. But I could try it again if nothing else works.

Thanks to all.

EXERCISE!!!!!!! it'll be best if you do a work out each day, like jogging, riding a bike, work out at the gym, etc. you don't need to do it to excess, just to let out the tension/anxiety. and it's a natural remedy!

I agree with the exercise suggestion! I see this so much in my daughter. She is crabby crabby crabby--just plain hard to be around. But when she gets daily aerobic exercise, she is so much nicer.

Irritability can also be a symptom of depression.

You might need to take it up to three times a day..... Good Luck.

EXERCISE? I'm much more of a pill popper than an exerciser, but I realize that exercise is good advice nonetheless. But exercise takes some enthusiasm to embark upon, and I'm usually too apathetic to make the effort. So, I guess I'll keep looking at pill options.

I probably prefer herbal to prescription, but I can't rule out Xanax and such.

Thanks for all the fine advice.

klonopin helps me not to be edgy & quick tempered. as for exercise i totally agree. it helps me sooo much mentally & physically & sleep also. if i cant exercise im very grumpy & aggravated but then if im able to exercise im much nicer also. i have an 18 month old baby & hubby doesnt exactly jump at the thought of keeping her for an hour while mommy goes to work out. in all fairness hes had his own issues with addiction anger & after much prayer sought help about a month ago (PRAISE THE LORD) he has got started on his own meds & today we came to a compromise about me working out. sorry to ramble. it just came to me that i have had a lot of resentment & irritation over this. i hope u can find something that helps

I heard passion flower was also good. I was told by a dr. to try it in liquid form and just put a drop or 2 on my tongue. Havn't tried it yet.

Are you sleeping OK? I know too little sleep makes me very irritable. Exercise and activity can help with that, but sometimes sleep meds are needed too. (I often need a sleep med even when I am very tired.)

This may sound "old-fashioned" but warm milk works for me when I'm edgy. I know you're not much for food or beverage, Trevor, but it helps me sometimes. Also some soothing music, like jazz.

Thinking of my guy's two cats help, as I love those cats as if they were my own!!!

I take Klonopin occassionally for sleep if I'm too "wired" or irritable to sleep.

klonopin is wonderful for anxiety/irritability. i've been taking 1mg PRN in .5mg dosages for a few months now. i am a bit worried about the notorious addiction of benzos, though

What's good is to explore where this comes from, what it involves (wishes, expectations, fears, etc) for you. The knowledge you gain from this is lasting and life changing. Are you in psychotherapy?

You're right, Trevor! It can take a whole lot of effort for me to get to the gym regularly, but most of the time it does help my moods. It doesn't always work for irritability though, and it seems I'm sometimes I'm even more irritable afterwards. LOL Plus, I get more winded from exercising than I used to, since I'm not so young anymore.

I do feel the effects of no exercise if I don't do it even for just one week. So I guess it really does help body & mind as the experts keep telling us, but it's not easy to keep up with. I do find it's something I have to stay in the habit of doing, or I won't do it at all anymore.
