Hello all I'm new here and have some questions. I'm 29 and started taking risperdal when I was 10. So I have been on it for 19 years and have been fine with it even though I have some side effects. I take it to treat mild schizophrenia and take 4 mg per night. But now I decided to switch to Risperdal Consta because I am on my own now taking my pills and am forgetting to take them. So my question is will Consta be worse or better for sedations issues which is the biggest issue for me taking the pills since it makes me sleep for at least 12 to 16 hours a night and once I wake up it takes me another couple of hours to feel better and fully wake up to get on with my daily activities. This is something I am having a hard time dealing with as I get older. I received my first injection last night of 12.5 mg of Consta and will continue to take my 4 mg pills for the next three weeks until the injections fully get into my system. Since I've received the injection last night and have been on it for a day and also took my 4 mg pill I actually slept less than 12 hours which surprised me but instead feel very out of it and limited in my mind and don't feel sleepy at all. Will this feeling go away since I just received the injection or will it get worse as the Consta gets more into my system. I hope it's just temporary as I don't feel I could deal with it getting worse. But aside from that once I'm off the pills will the sedation be better or worse from the Consta and will it level out my sleeping issues. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to PC.

Not sure I have seen anyone around here in that situation. I would imagine you are going to have to wait and see after you have been off the pills for awhile and on the injections only. That is a lot of sleep and with the wake up time doesn't leave much left in the day.

Have you ever considered trying another AAP?

I tried Zyprexa when I was 14 but it really knocked me out and gave me a very slow heart beat so I went off of it in two days. Then I tried Abilify when I was around 18 but it severely decreased my appetite and I never wanted to eat. Just two years ago I tried an old typical antipsychotic Trifluoperazine which had no side effects for me but unfortunately wasn't very effective in treating my illness. Other than those I always have been with risperdal which works great for me but as I got into my late 20's it has been making me sleep too much. BTW on the third day now I feel much better and don't feel the way I was describing before so I'm happy and hope once I'm off the pills and just the injections I can get a more leveled sleep and awake.
