Hi All,

I have been diagnosed having anxity and depression and the doctor. I have tried different med but didn't help so the doctor prescribe me first 5 mg than 10 mg of olanzapine.

This med helps me a lot in terms of depression and sleeping but i have gained 10lbs after taking them in 3 months and developed a huge tummy.
Because of this, my doctor gives me abilify instead
(i was 178 cm talk and now 165lbs)

I have been off olanzapine for 2 weeks but it seems my weight didn't go down even i am on diet and keep doing exercise. I searched on the web and some people said that the weight gained is not easy to get rid of. From your experience, when the weight gained could be lose?

Thanks,
Noel

kogcolgate, Hello and welcome to PC.

Olanzapine is one of the atypical antipsychotics that is widely known to cause weight gain. You were not on it for too long so you should be able to lose this weight. It took a while to put this weight on and it may take a little longer for it to come off. I had success from med weight gain by totally changing my diet. It took a few months but it worked for me. I used to be on Seroquel and that one can be a weight issue as well.

If you need any help getting around this site feel free to contact any community liaison or moderator.

Best wishes here at PC.

Welcome to Psych Central kogcolgate. Sorry for your weight concerns. I find the type of food affects me also although meds are a definite influence. I stick to a low carb, moderate to high protein diet with many non-starchy vegetables and fruits like grapefruit, cantelope and strawberries that are lower in sugar.
