Hey guys,

My doc recently prescribed me amitriptyline for chronic pain as a result of a concussion. I'm finding that it actually is moderately helping (allows me to have some days relatively headache-free), though I'm finding that lately I have been really dizzy whenever I get up - you know that feeling where you get a head rush if you stand up too quick? Well I get that, EVERY time. I'm also super tired during the day (yet ironically, can't sleep at night!).

I'm concerned to whether or not this is a side-effect of the med, or whether this has something to do with my concussion.

Has any one else experienced similar side-effects with this med?

I have an appt with pdoc next week so I will ask her then, just wanted to see if anyone here had any input!

Thanks!
Jacq

Hi - I haven't experienced the symptoms you describe. I started on 50mg and went up to 200mg. Initially I did feel very tired and struggled to wake in the morning, and felt pretty tired a lot. Sometimes when I wake during the night I can feel quite disorientated. It's good that you're seeing your pdoc soon - I hope you can find the right meds for you, if it turns out amitriptyline isn't it.

check your blood pressure, could be orthostatic hypotension. Try standing up slooooowly. also, you might try increasing your fluid intake. it can help increase your blood pressure. You might try taking the elavil at night or ask your doc if you can split the dose, halfin the am, half at night. good luck!

I had to take this for a short time for pain relief too. Mainly to help me to sleep through the night. So I took it late evening for that. I had a heck of a time waking up in the AM and it took a long time for it to wear off. So I just took it on my really bad days. I eventually went off becuase it was too sedating.

well, went to the doc. Do have a slightly lower blood pressure when I stand up... she suggested drinking more water.

We also increase my dose because my headaches are still there, so I will be on 30mg's ... I'm not increasing it until my exams are done with so I don't get too sleepy when I especially need to be focusing.
