I've been taking 40mg a day of Fluoxetine ( Prozac) since 2004. This last week I have had some devastating news and my doc will not give me anymore than a weeks supply of 2mg Diazapan 3 doses a day. I don't feel that they are touching me. Will he refuse to increase the dose because of the addictive aspect these pills pose. I also want increase my prozac to 60mg from 40mg. I currently take the 2x20mg together. If it were 60mg would it be better to spread out the dosage. All advice really appreciated.

Welcome BENJAMIM100 to PC.
Since Prozac is generally taken once a day, I don't see the benefit of spreading out the dosage. I am not a doctor so it would be best to ask your doctor. I would not make any increases in your Prozac dosage without letting your prescriber know. Prozac can be beneficial in helping panic attacks and 60mg is on the high end of dosage. i know my doc started giving me my meds a week at a time when he was worried because i made a comment about the idea of overdosing. if i didnt have more than a week of meds in his eyes, there was no danger in that. but they are addicting so docs do have to monitor that as well. as for the prozac, spreading the dose out over the day would equalize the med in your system.

Hi Benjamin, sorry you had devastating news. How bad is that affecting you on a day to day coping basis? Some people chose a therapist that specializes in the area of their most pressing problem, but this can take time to arrange because therapists are in high demand.
If I am under increased stress I try to exercise daily and do yoga and mindfulness training. A safety plan is important if you are so greatly affected that you are having any thoughts of harming yourself. Someone posted this link to Samaritans | Samaritans I believe they have branches in England. For more on safety plan if that is of interest Psych Central - Search results for Samaritans safety plan Feel free to Private Message me or any of the community liaisons (left click on the blue name to the left of their post and select Send Private Message to [Name])

I'm not a doctor so definitely check with yours, but I don't think it would make a difference if you spread the Prozac out because it has such a long half life. I take 80 mgs and my doc has me take it all at the same time.

Prozac has a really, really long half life. It shouldn't matter if you take it together or not. I'm sorry you had such devastating news. Now is probably a good time to try to focus on doing everything you can to take care of yourself.
I hope things get better soon. |
