I wonder if I'm alone in this? Vistaril helps me sleep and has been ok'd by my doctor during pregnancy. But the next day I'm like a raging monster. I'm a completely different person. Everything sets me off and I'm yelling and snapping at all my loved ones.

I didn't take it last night and so far today I'm feeling ok, I hope it lasts.
Does any one else have a similar reaction?

I take it sometimes for sleep or for anxiety. My main side effect when I take it at night seems to be a headache the next day. I don't know what dosage you take. I only take 25 mg most of the time.

Here it is not OK during pregnancy. I kind of wonder why use such an inefficient med that is not even proven safe. Irritability is always possible on antihistamines, some get it some not. I don't but I get fearful on them.

I've never reacted that way to it, but I can't take it anymore because it makes me throw up

Here, it's called Atarax.

1/2 a a tablet makes me sleepy IME.

FWIW, could the irritation be because of the sleepiness ?
Irritability can be a consequence of sleepiness.

What's the basis of your blanket statement ?

I dont know about the next day moods, but maybe talk to your doc about benadryl in its place? Its in the same class, has very similar effects, has a shorter half life so you may not get the next day side effects and its a preg class B, rather than C. Something to think about?

Hi,

I've just started taking hydroxyzine this last Saturday...

It does ok as far as taking care of my anxiety, but if I take a whole pill (25mg) it literally knocks me out....which is an issue for me because I'm usually home alone with my toddler.

I've also noticed some increased irritability, but I don't know if it's from the hydro or from the Effexor (took it for two days and had to stop because of the side effects).

It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion though, especially since you're pregnant.

Thanks for this!

Within the last several months, I took vistaril as a sleep aid since it is sometimes used for that in hospital settings, but I started becoming delusional and had what approached a psychotic break. I've never had any prior mental health issues, but I was required by my job to undergo treatment at a psychiatric/addiction rehab program. My symptoms could have been partly due to severe sleep loss over the week prior to beginning the sleep aid (due to anxiety), but my symptoms didn't really start until I began the vistaril.

During the course of my rehab, I met an orthopedic surgeon who said his father, an anesthesiologist took vistaril on a cruise and started talking to walls.

I personally can never take it again.

Hope that helps.
