I am prescribed Adderall XR for Adult ADD. I had to have a pre-employment drug test today and I'm wondering how the Adderall will affect the test? If it shows up, what are the ramifications and what happens? I have a legitimate prescription from my health care provider but wondered if this could be grounds not to hire me?

MrsBigE,
I do not know this for sure but I am pretty positive that it is illegal for a company to not hire you because of prescription drugs that you are on. It is a legit drug for a legit reason and not hiring you because of it (or because of the ADD) is discrimination.

Hello Peg,
Years ago I was taking Prozac and I just started a new job that required drug testing so I was nervous that somehow the test would come back positive because I was taking this medicaiton. Well I took to the nurse/doctor at the clinic where I was getting drug tested and I told them that I was on Prozac and wanted to know two things 1. Would this cause the test to be positive to which I was told no and 2. Would my employer need to know about my medication and he said absolutely not and the clinic can not due to privacy/confidential laws reveal the fact that you are on medication to your employer. So I would talk to the nurse/doctor who is handling your drug test and tell them about your medication and ask if it will affect your drug test (I don't think it will). Legally they can not disclose any medical information to your employer so don't worry about telling them. Hope this info. helps you.

My HR person told me that if the test came back positive then the doctor/medical examiner would call me and ask about prescriptions and then verify with my physician. After that they would call my HR office and give a "negative" on the drug results.
This whole process worries me... I've never done this before but I'm hopeful that what I've been told by HR is correct....
Thanks for your responses!

Peg

Hi,
I take Adderal XR and you did the right thing by letting the HR know that you are currently prescribed and taking the Adderal XR. This Medication is a Schedule (2) Controlled substance or a Narcotic and if not informed ahead of time of being on this or any narcotic medication. Adderal XR would more than like show up as an amphetamine on a Urine Drug Screen and if they were unaware of your prescribed med, they may think of it as Cocaine or another narcotic amphetamine.

I agree, that would be discrimination.
Try not to worry, if you are on a prescribed med and it is not causing any interference with your performance then there should be no qualms about it, I am sure there are laws protecting you on this if it became an issue with the potential employer.
Please take care now,
