How long should you wait to determine whether an increased dosage of an SSRI will help? I know the general recommendations are 6 - 8 weeks at therapeutic dose, sometimes more, but I've read that when increasing the dose it doesn't take as long because you are not starting from 0.
What is an appropriate time frame to determine whether an increased dosage is going to work or something else needs to be tried? |

I'm not sure, but my pdoc wanted to see me after 5-6 weeks after increasing the dosage.

My p-doc said if it's a dosage increase, then I should see some improvement within a few weeks. She said if you're already on the drug, you should feel effects sooner from an increased dosage than if you were just starting the drug from scratch.

Depends on the drug but the rule of thumb is 3 half-lives (or 5 if you are ****)..
So let's say your SSRI has a half-life of 24 hours. In 1 day your plasma level will be 50%, 2 days, 75%, 3 days 86%, and that's 'steady state' when it finally hits 99%. Then you want to give 3-14 days to establish homeostasis (the brain compensating for the toxin/SSRI) before you up or down the dosage. What's the drug? |
