So yesterday/two days ago, i started to feel like people were trying to get me, and animals were sending me secret messages, and there was someone talking to me who wasn’t there about how to fight back against the people after me, and I was really paranoid and scared pretty much the whole day (morning and night anyways). It hasn’t been back since. But this happened on day 5 of me starting Prozac. Is it possible for Prozac to cause psychosis, or that I had a out of the blue psychotic episode? I’m only at 10mg, and am tapering off Effexor XR. I was at 75mg at the time. I know psychosis isn’t a sign of serotonin syndrome and my pdoc told me that I should not get serotonin syndrome from this dose of Prozac. I see her on Monday, so I’ll see what she thinks then. I was just wondering if this happened to anyone else on this drug, or another SSRI/SNRI? Thank you.

I'm responding so that I can say I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I know what it is like to go through psychosis except I have had it much longer than you mentioned so I definitely understand although mine had differences in comparison to yours.

Well, I can't be of much help if at all because although I do take a higher doseage of Prozac well the generic form of it, than you do. I take a total of 80 mg two 40 mg capsules in the mornings. That is definately not what caused my psychosis. For one thing, I was not taking it at the time and I've had pscychosis more than once while not taking Prozac or the generic of it.

Also, although when I first started having psychosis, I was taking more than one different medications. It was not caused by any of my medications. It was caused as I eventually found out although not right away after the psychosis lifted. That in my case it was caused by Schizoaffective Disorder. in case you don't know what that is.

It is when a person has symptoms of a mood disorder either Major Depressive Disorder or Bipolar Disorder along with prominent elements of Schizophrenia.

There are also disorders that some people get diagnosed with referred to as Bipolar Disorder with Psychotic Features and then some people get diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder with Psychotic Features.

There are some similarities between Bipolar Disorder with Psychotic Features and Major Depressive Disorder with Psychotic Features and Schizoaffective Disorder. But they are not the same thing as Schizoaffective Disorder they are all considered separate disorders and there are differences between all of them.

So, in a nutshell I take the generic for Prozac like I said but I was not taking it when I got the Psychosis for the first time and I don't have Psychosis right now. As you probably noticed I am taking a high dosage of it.

I do not know if it is possible for it to cause Psychosis in someone or not. So after leaving this long post I have to say that I can't really answer your question. I am sorry about that.

I hope that things go well for you and that your Psychiatrist is able to determine what the problem is and is able to help you.
Thanks for this!

Prozac made me manic, so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to cause psychosis.
