Has anyone ever been on Lexapro for depression and suicidal thoughts and it made them worse? I've never heard of anything like that with lexapro. Now I'm being switched to Prozac and I'm worried about what side effects are to be expected. I hate switching medications because I always seem to react very strongly either good or bad. Any thoughts or experiences with either of these meds is appreciated.

I don't know that lexipro made me worse, but it didn't help as I ended up hospitalized while on it. I got switched to Zoloft which works much better for me.

I've never taken Lexapro. As for Prozac I take the generic form of it Fluoxetine 80 mg total two 40 mg capsules in the morning among other medications. I haven't had a bad experience with it but everyone is different.

It helps my mom's depression and she hasn't had a bad experience, also I have a female relative that's biologically related that takes it and she has not had a bad experience either rather it has helped her. But again some people are different.

I wish I could be of more help and offer more advice.

I hope that my post helps at least some.

Mental Health Medications:

Lithium two 300 mg tablets = 600 mg in the morning two 300 mg = 600 mg at night total 1200 mg.

Fluoxetine/Prozac two 40 mg capsules total 80 mg in the morning

Prazosin two two mg capsules =four mg in the morning four five mg capsules = 20 mg at night total 24 mg (High Blood Pressure Medicine for Night Mares, This is actually quite a high dose for a female for night mares, but my blood pressure is fine.)

Quetiapine/Seroquel two 300 mg tablets total 600 mg at night.

The above medications are prescribed by a Pschychiatrist.

I also take some other medications some of which are taken as needed. That are not for my mental health that are prescribed by my Family Doctor that are not listed here.

Of Course my Family Doctor is aware and at least has on his office's computer system what medications my Psychiatrist is prescribing and my Psychiatrist has on his office's computer what my Family Doctor is prescribing. Which is as I am sure many people already know, very important.

Diagnosis:

Schizoaffective Disorder
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder With Dissociative Features
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Obessive Compulsive Disorder

I'm on Lexapro and I can't say much because it's the only anti-depressant I've been on .. it made me extremely manic at first because the doctor didn't think I had Bipolar but after a few days of being on it my energy levels skyrocketed. So finally they tried me on it with other meds and it hasn't necessarily helped my depression but my pdoc doesn't seem to want to try anything else. I'm going to be talking to him about possibly changing it when I go on the 22nd to see him.. maybe I need a different one. Cause it sure doesn't seem to fit the bill for me. It doesn't make me worse with other meds mixed in .. but it doesn't help either ..

Thanks for the responses. I'm in process of weening off lexapro and it sucks. Super tired with headache and I'm grumpy for no reason. Will be glad when this part is over.

Hi. I was on Lexapro for about 2 years before being forced to stop it due to family stigma of mental illness. But I overall had no side effects with it. I thought it was helping me, but people around me said I had depression (ie my social worker and child and youth worker) so maybe it wasn’t as helpful as I thought. It didn’t increase my suicidal thoughts. That was Luvox for me. And i just started Prozac and had a psychotic episode on day 5 of starting it. I’ll see what my pdoc thinks about it on Monday though. I’m not sure if it was caused by the new medication, me getting off my old medication, a symptom of depression (or psychotic depression), or something else. I will have to wait and see. I’m currently on 10mg of Prozac.

Prozac worked better for my depression than Lexparo. It did make me manic however and I ended up having to go off it.
