I am on week 6 of taking 20mg Lexapro and am noticing anxious side effects. I feel like crying and that my heart and throat are really tight. Didn't know to post this in anxiety or in psychiatric medications.

I am very frustrated but also feel more socially engaged at work rather than withdrawn. However I would say I am still experiencing terrible moods, just that instead of depressed I am anxious.

Gah! What to do?

Have you told your prescriber what's happening with you?
Thanks for this!

Yes... just wanting to hear if that is at all normal! Haven't heard back from her yet.

I had anxiety side effects from Prozac. I already have generalized anxiety/panic disorder, and Prozac made the anxiety much worse (though it helped with the depression!) Since Lexapro is also an SSRI, I imagine it could have the same effect. You may need a different med, since at 6 weeks in, side effects that would go away would probably already have gone away.
Thanks for this!

Talked to my dr, she recommended either anxiety classes or Buspar, which I've taken in the past and hasn't helped.

Did you have anxiety before the lexapro? If not, you need a different med.

Yes, back in the day (9+ years ago) I was diagnosed with GAD. However now the anxiety is sort of moving all over my body in a new way. Also been doing a lot of yoga..

If you're feeling a new type of anxiety, sounds like it's the Lexapro. Plus I'd think the yoga would help with anxiety, too. It sounds like you need a different med...

I had a similar experience with Lexapro. After about 3 or 4 weeks on it I began to feel incredibly anxious. It was more like an adrenalin rush. I was shakey, nervous, jumpy... kind of the like the adrenal rush you get after a car accident. Not a fun adrenaline rush. Doc pulled me off of it immediately and within a couple of days the side effects went away.
Thanks for this!

I take Paxil for anxiety. It has been very effective for me. Before Paxil I had physical symptoms as a result of anxiety that were debilitating.
Thanks for this!

Thank you guys so much! I am emailing my doctor and being more insistent since she seems to think having anxiety is OK and manageable, which is not for me.
