Hi.
I am on 200 m nortryptyline 2mg clonazapam 2 mg risperdal 100mg topamax 30 mg temazapam I am 150kg 198cm male. I am massively overweight. The topamax worked for a long time and suppressed my appetite to the point where I barley ate anything at all, but now it's not working and I am starving al the time. Is it possible for me to lose weight on all these medications. Any tips or tricks on what I can do would be greatly appreciated. I've started eating heathy for the past two weeks but I get so hungry I have to constantly snack on biscuits or something. Does coffee make you more hungry? Thank you all |

I just responded to a post on weight gain and psych meds......something a lot of people seem to be dealing with.....ugh.
1 person said it helped working with a dietician for weight loss. I have not tried that but it's worth a shot. I don't believe coffee makes you more hungry, but I am not quite sure. Good luck to you. |

The caffeine in coffee can make you hungry. One thing is to keep yourself hydrated with water because caffeine tends to dehydrate you. Many times people mistake thirst for hunger and eat instead of drinking water. But yes, many psych med do cause weight gain, however I'm not familiar enough with your medications to know the specific side effects.

Hi. I've done some more reading and have found out that risperdal can lower metabolism and do other things that will cause weight gain. I am eating clean and heathy and have been exercising for a month, but no weight is coming off. Is it impossible to lose weight on this medication? I have Tourette's and risperdal is the only suitable ap because it's the best dopamine blocker, I've tried largactil and zyprexA.

Biscuits aka cookies are weight bombs for me. I can work like a horse to sweat off 5 lbs and a couple packs of Oreos will put it all back so fast. Make salads your friend (i heard that somewhere! and i try to follow it) also protein. I just started using a low step to exercise with - just up and down during tv commercials, but it sure seems to do the trick.

A couple things...
Have you had your thyroid levels tested? If you are hypothyroid (low thyroid hormones) you can gain weight and it makes it hard to lose weight. Most of the APs, including risperdal effect metabolism.. It is hard to lose weight and easy to gain weight when taking them. Have you tried Latuda or Abilify or Geodon as those are "supposed to be more weight neutral." Although some people still gain weight on them. Hankster is right. Stop the biscuits and eat fruit and veggies. See a nutritionist who can make a meal plan with you, based on your needs and what you like. Drink lots of water. Water can help you feel full. Lots of people gain weight on these things. Big pharma s^cks. |
