I don't like medication. I don't like side effects and putting myself at risk.

So, there's one bottle of Celexa 10mg in my house I was prescribed that's been there for months, but I seriously end up having a panic attack when I try to take it. (Ugh, probably expired by now...)

I know 10mg can't do much, but it's scary (and the top side effect on Google is anxiety?! But I have anxiety?! This is supposed to help the anxiety?).

For me personally Celexa was a horrible medication, but many others have had success with it. Meds are usually good for about 2 years, so I wouldn't worry about it being expired.

Sometimes meds for anxiety and depression can make them worse, but that usually doesn't happen. They usually help.

But if you don't want to take it, don't take it. But you will have to figure out a way to deal with your anxiety.

I went on Citalopram (Celexa) for anxiety last year...

Speaking from experience the side effects I initially got were mild nausea & feeling a little tired. My mood also dropped for a couple of weeks but my anxiety never got any worse. After a few weeks that all disappeared & I was left with no side effects at all on 20mg. It worked wonders for my anxiety.

I think your fear of trying the medication is blown out of proportion by your anxiety. Yes, there are some minor side effects at first but as I said they will go away.

I don't think you have anything to lose by trying the medication & in fact stand to benefit quite a lot potentially. Why not give it a shot?

The main side effect of Celexa for me was getting really sleepy. To the point that I had to take something else instead. You could try taking like half a pill maybe, if it's in tablet form.

Celexa worked wonders for me. I too was terrified to start a med. What I did and my dr knew about it I literally broke the pill up using a pill cutter and took a crumb of it the first day a little more the second.. Long story short I worked my way up to 40 mg by then had no trouble taking it at all.

I have cut my dose to 10mg per day after a year at 20mg: it seems fine after two months. The 20mg eventually made me rather tired. I will try 5mg in spring, and nothing in summer.

Obviously if I had any worries or doubts I would consult my physician.

I've been taking this a month for depression with anxiety. Please don't be frightened of it. Everyone's different in how it effects them but it may work for you and some people don't have any side effects at all. I sat looking at my box of tablets for over a month because I was frightened of what they would do to me but in the end I felt so desperate I started taking them. I took 10mg for first two weeks then 20. Had really bad anxiety for first two days then some mild nausea and dizziness, but it was gone after first week. By end of week 2 my appetite had increased dramatically and I realised I wasn't getting upset as much. Anxiety back when I upped the dose but only lasted 2 days again. Half way through last week I was actually feeling quite cheerful and since yesterday I'm actually relaxed. Plus I have so much more energy. I'm really pleased with it. No way I wouldn't take it now!

I've never taken Celexa, but I felt the same way about taking Paxil. When I was prescribed it, I sat on the first bottle for a few months before I had the nerve to try it. So far seems to help and I have NONE of the dreaded side effects I feared! Except some fatigue, but I had that anyway.

I understand how you feel, but honestly, I've found most SSRIs are not much more than sugar pills. Celexa did give me a headache, however.

I fear most antipsychotics; I would never take Haldol. I'm afraid of Lithium and Depakote. I'm even afraid to bump my dosage of Seroquel because of serious side effects.

There are many psych meds out there which can kill you. They have a black box warning label. But 10 mg of Celexa isn't going to do much of anything to you. Honestly, if Celexa could fix my problems, I would eat them like M&Ms...unfortunately, it doesn't get it for me.

Really..... Relax.

10mg of Celexa gave me more side effects than most of the antipsychotics and anticonvulsants I've been on. It was so bad for me I only lasted 2 weeks on it, and they were a horrible 2 weeks.

I also want to say that I was afraid of lithium too, and it was one of the last drugs I tried, and it wasn't bad at all. It also wasn't that effective for me, so with all the risks involved, I decided to drop it. But that's the thing -- you have to weigh the benefits and the downsides.

This is my first experience of taking an antidepressant so I'm not sure what is meant to happen and what isn't. I wasn't troubled by the side effects, they were mild and only very temporary.I have to say, even though I got more nervous for a few days, I think they've got rid of my anxiety almost altogether now. It's almost like I can't be bothered to worry and I'm a bit perturbed by it because I'm way more relaxed than is my normal character! So they obviously can work. Im up and down with my mood though. Maybe its like that for a while? For me it is worth it though because i feel a lot better than I did. Maybe it will be worth it for you or maybe you would prefer a different way of dealing with things. It's up to you but i dont think there's any need to worry about them. Despite the long side effects list I've actually had more problems with pain killers

I have just upped my dose per pdoc to 20mg Citalopram (I think that is the same thing) and I did not have severe side effects with 10mg - so it is ok so far. The benefits (no anger, anxiety, even scalp picking) first time for over 30-years! I can hardly believe it! I take one pill(10mg) evey 12 hours (the trouble is...how to do it.) I can take them to work, but I might forget. I still do not want to take it at once but I may have to. The side effects of sleepines on occasions it a blessing for this insomniac. There is some light headedness, less appetite (which again good for me as I am overweight)

I'm taking it as a substitute for Prozac. As far as I can tell, it's having exactly the same effect.
