Hi.
One of my step sons is tapering off of 2 mg of Risperidone after about 18 months of use. The PDOC cut him to 1 mg for this week and then says he can stop it. This seems really fast to me. I know that they want to start another AP as soon as he is off this one but shouldn't it be a little slower? Will he face WD? A worsening of his active delusion? I am trying to trust the PDOC but my son has been through 8 years of hell I don't want this to add to it. Anyone have experience coming off this drug?? Thanks. ![]() |

I was on 2mg of Risperidone for around 6 months... I decided I wanted to try coming off it & talked to my p-doc about it. He was happy for me to do so & advised me it was ok to stop at that dosage without tapering down. Bear in mind that 2mg is a fairly low dose to begin with anyway.
I didn't have any noticeable "withdrawal" effects although my voices did get a bit worse after a couple of weeks for a month or so but have quietened down now. In terms of switching from one AP to another, when I tapered from Abilify to Risperidone, it was very fast. I similarly did a low dose for 1 week followed the next week by the starting dose of Risperidone. In that circumstances, I had absolutely no ill effects or worsening of symptoms. I'm sure the p-doc does know what they are doing. I'm sure your step son will be ok... ![]()

I'm on a much higher dose, and have been on it for years, and I get hellish withdrawal if I forget to take it. Watch for headaches, dizziness, and nausea.
He may be fine, i know people who came off it with no problems, just watch him carefully and if he seems to be getting sick, call his Dr. splitimage |
