I have suffered from anxiety most of my life, and I have been taking Trifluoperazine for the last 9 years. It works for me pretty well, but I think I'm getting tolerant to it. Does anyone know of newer meds out there that work well against anxiety? Thanks!

Hi,

Trifluoperazine is an antipsychotic. There are many newer medications in this class. Other drugs, SSRIs for example, are helpful for many anxiety sufferers. Do you remember what all you have tried in the past?

Thanks,

moogs

The medication that has worked wonders for my severe anxiety is a beta-blocker called Inderal.

Trifluoperazine is a phenothiazine first-generation antipsychotic, and so if that's helped your anxiety a lot then, as another poster said, one of the 2nd or 3rd generation antipsychotics (available since the early 90s) such as quetiapine may also help you.

BUT, as the same poster said, the numerous newer drugs in classes like SSRI antidepressants and benzodiazepine anxiolytics are what are usually the first-line treatments nowadays for anxiety disorders like GAD.

An SSRI depressant sertraline (Zoloft), made available in the 90s, has helped my anxiety and SAD a large ton, and I know many people who have had their anxiety problems further reduced, if not eliminated, by prescribed clonazepam and lorazepam, the former of which is fairly new compared to some of the other popular anxiolytics.

Regardless, I really hope you get your situation straightened out friend! I know how terrible anxiety can be :/

Like previous people have said, there's a ton of things out there now for anxiety. A lot of the SSRIs, especially Zoloft, paxil and luvox, even though they're all technically indicated for it, about half the second gen antipsychotics - Seroquel, zyprexa, Risperdal appear to work the best and there's a bunch of off label use of cardiac meds - beta blockers like propranolol, metoprolol or alpha agonists like clonidine. I've also seen antihistamines like Benadryl and hydroxyzine used. Those tend to make you pretty sleepy though. The point is, there's a lot out there. If an anti psychotic worked well for you, the second generations work similarly, they just tend to have less side effects.
Good luck. It sucks when something stops working.

Hydroxyzine, Buspar, along with most antidepressants. I am sure your pdoc can come up with something else for you to try.
