Hi,

I've been diagnosed over the years with bipolar, bipolar 2, anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, adjustment disorder, PTSD....

I've tried every medication class, and more than one in each class usually. None were worth the side effects - mostly weight gain, metabolic syndrome, high blood sugars, akithisia, sexual side effects... and not that effective anyway.

An old friend has been encouraging me to get tested for ADHD and the results were that I have the traits, but it was unclear if they were ADHD or stemming from other disorders. Based on that, my pdoc agreed to let me try Ritalin. I have been much happier - it is helping enormously - I can get a lot of work done, and I'm not bored and restless and spaced out at work like I was. I sleep well, and side effects are manageable - weight loss, thirsty a lot, that's about it.

Not only am I not as distractible, and annoying and all the things that go with ADHD, but my mood is better, no suicidal thoughts, much less anxiety, and I can "live in the now."

Has anyone used ADHD meds for depression? It seems to be serving a dual use. If it works, is there any reason not to take it for that reason, if I'm also taking it for ADHD symptoms? I'm taking it as prescribed, 10mg 4 times a day, and my life it much better than it was.

I read an article recently that said some cases of treatment resistant depression might involve undiagnosed and untreated ADHD. Sorry that I can't find the bookmark, I thought I had saved it.

I did better at work when I took stimulants (Concerta) but my current pdoc "doesn't believe in adult ADHD." I didn't notice any of the other improvements you've reported.

I would keep an eye on things because it might be that Ritalin will/can cause a manic or hypomanic episode. Good luck, though!

Thanks! If things continue going well, and some pdoc decided he "didn't believe in" my issues, I'd find a new one. Ideology should have no place in medicine. I'm keeping an eye on things, and I have a great therapist.

It's kind of funny - there's no such thing as "adult ADHD." There's just ADHD. Does this guy even know about the DSM? )
