Hi,

Awhile back my pdoc prescribed Ativan along with my other meds for anxiety. I hated it...it made me foggy and I had memory issues. Also, I noticed on it I became severely depressed. I developed tolerance and had to keep increasing my dose... I just went off of it and the withdrawals are terrible. Antihistamines tend to trigger depression as well.

My doc has now put me on Vistaril and Gabapentin instead. Has anyone here taken Benzos or Vistaril and it made their depression worse? It seems with Bi-olar and BPD the balance between falling into mania or depression can get out of wack with certain meds...for me antidepressants are horrible
Esp cause I have BPD as well.
I also take Seroquel and Lamictal...

It makes sense that anti-anxiety meds could cause depression.

Yeah
Since I have a mood disorder I think it threw me off. Hopefully the vistaril and gabapentin will be better

For me personally, vistaril didn't really help with anxiety and I think it did mess with my depression. Like you, I find antihistamines just seem to be bad for my moods.
It's normal for benzos to make depression worse sometimes, too. In the past they seemed to worsen my depression at times, but anymore they seem to be fine. I've noticed it seems to depend which other meds I'm on somewhat, and if depression's bad they make it worse, whereas if it's just moderate or above I'm usually fine.

I've definitely heard good things about both Vistari and gabapentin, too, though, so hopefully both work well for you. Good luck!
Thanks for this!

Vistaril is primarily classified as an antihistamine, so if you have found antihistamines to cause depression, this may not be the right med for you. Definitely talk to your pdoc about this.
