I've decided to come off Lexapro for my anxiety after being on them 2 years. A deciding factor for me was the weight I've put on since being on them, as its really getting me down. Has anyone else experienced weight gain on this medication?

The doctor I saw told me it could take 6 months to come off them completely. This seems like quite a long time, does this sound right to anyone here?

6 months is a really long time for Lexapro. NOTE: it varies wildly per person. I've always weaned off SSRIs by dropping 25% of my dose each week. That is, 25% of the original dose I was at.

You can come off of them as quickly as you're comfortable with.

I came off Lexapro no problem (switched directly to zoloft). And Lexapro was a completely weight neutral med for me. And I loved it until it pooped out on me.
Thanks for this!

I'm the same, it was great and then suddenly it stopped working
I think I'll go ahead and taper off myself, any advice?

6 months is not outrageous, especially if you've been on the Lexapro for a while and/or at a higher dose. If you were switching to another SSRI you might just stop the Lexapro and continue with the new med. If you're not going with another SSRI, it can take a good long while to withdraw. The slower, the better.

Are you switching to another SSRI? If so, it's probably okay to just switch them out one day. If not, talk to your doctor about tapering down. I'm the last person you should ask about doing that since I pretty much never do. In my 5 years of meds for bipolar I can't count the number of med changes I've had, but can count the number of times I've tapered off something on one hand.
