So my pdoc put me back on Seroquel since Saphris wasn't working. I gained 50 pounds on it last year and really didn't want to go back on it. But that is where I am at right now. So my question is how do you tame the excessive hunger you feel from the Seroquel? I am trying really hard to watch what I eat but I am just so hungry all of the time. I really need to lose weight but I have pretty much given up on that right now and am just trying not to gain anymore.

The hunger thing is tough. For me, I feel sick if I don't keep food in my stomach at all times. Of course that makes me gain weight. All I can suggest is, eat healthy snacks throughout the day so you feel full. Dried mango is a great snack.

I'm on Seroquel as well as 3 other meds.

Some people find this method controversial, but I have switched to a low carb, high fat diet, and have found it to really help me stay satisfied and not starving all the time. I found a good forum online for info, read a few books, and am confident that I'm getting the nutrition I need.

I was eating whole grains and fruits, and not a ton of junk food before, but I still felt screaming hunger all the time, and it was terrible. With my new eating plan, it's been a little bit difficult, but worth it. I can eat when I'm hungry, I don't overeat because the fat is satisfying, and I've managed to lose weight after trying unsuccessfully other ways for a long time.

Good for you. I tried to do this with super human power and ate a good diet before taking this drug. I had had a severe heart stent put in one year before so my diet and exercise was excellent. I am a man who is 6'2" inches tall and 165 lbs. after 6 month on this drug I had put on 50lbs. This was crazier than this drug I was on. So I had them shift me to a weight neutral drug. I felt better mentally but it took me a long time to lose 50lbs and feel better about my appearance in social situations. No one likes to feel like a super fat Man when your crazy also.

My.psychiatrist put me on metformin a few years ago when I was taking an MAOI - like you I coukdnt satisfy my hunger and gained 10lbs in one month. Metformin is a drug for diabetes but pdocs use it off label to help patients control their weight when meds are the culprit. Its suspected that a lot of these meds mess with blood sugar levels, so you end up hungry 24/7. I guess metformin helps to keep your levels under control which should help the hunger and cravings. It did work for me for a while but I had to stop for other health issues.

I find drinking water and keeping healthy snacks around helpful. I work out a lot, though... so I will occasionally just eat the bad food (empty carbs) that Seroquel makes me crave. I honestly find the best way to combat the weight gain is to work out but I realize not everyone wants to spend 6-7hours a week exercising rigorously.

When I am trying to be good, however, dried fruits, seeds and nuts seem to work, (I am partial to pumpkin seeds). If I get sick of plain water I add some of those flavor things that you can buy - big fan of the "Crush" brand since I used to enjoy their pop/soda when I drank pop/soda.
Thanks for this!

Do you ever find seroquel gets in the way of you working out? I take 25mg at night to sleep but then when I wake up I am not ready to go.

I don't take seroquel anymore but I am supposed to be back on zyprexa and the only thing I've found is to keep good snacks on hand. I it a lot of fruit.

This diet I find strange and maybe harmful for plain weight loss, but in the context metabolism antipsychotic medication, it makes perfect sense. The med changes a very little how fat is broken down, it basically does not alter how proteins are treated but it drastically changes how carbs are treated in the body. The meds (Mostly Seroquel and Zyprexa), create an imbalance in the system to do with insulin, and basically most carbs will not be used as fuel, it will just be stored as fat. The med prevents carbs from being used as fuel. Then it sounds wiser to eat more of those things the body actually will use as fuel.

Whether it also regulates appetite will probably vary between people, but I have a feeling that the fake starvation mode created by the med can also increase hunger, so getting the calories that can be burnt could at least in theory decrease hunger since the body now knows it's not starving.

I only take 25mg of seroquel at night as needed for insomnia.

I did initially go off of seroquel because I thought it was causing weight gain and maybe it was, but only like 3-4 lbs. I've had a problem with carbs since I was a kid.

My nutrition plan (lower carbs increase protein) is to treat my mood disorder and my lightheadedness (that is why sodium was increased, wasn't getting enough, as well as protein rich foods).

After researching on my own, I'm pretty confident that this way of eating is not harmful.

I take 800mg and it does cause daytime drowsiness and honestly some laziness, but if I work out I find it actually beats the medication. It makes me feel more awake. So I often drag my butt to the pool and for the first few minutes I want to give up and then I get in my grove.
Thanks for this!
