I saw my DR yesterday and told him i want to taper off risperidone. He told me he could taper me off the 2 mg in 1 month. I have been taking it for 20 months. The 1 month taper seemed too fast for me, for i have read about all these horror stories of coming off too fast. This website and others advocate a 10% reduction, and then wait a few weeks to taper again. I am not sure what to do. Should i listen to my DR and taper in just a month, or taper as slow as 10% every few weeks off the current dose, which will take like a year?

I think you should tell the doc how you feel, and try to meet I the middle. At least give it a try. It also may be impractical for the longer taper due to available dosage of med. Just my thoughts.

2mg is a lower dose. You're probably going to be fine. What symptoms were you being treated for with it?

Here's a great book that will help you come off your med without becoming deathly ill by giving the body what it needs to function. I have the book, but was off my meds before I got it. Just the same, her advice is very sound.

I came straight off 2mg of Risperidone after being on it for 6 months & APs for a total of just over a year, without too much issue.

I've also tapered off other APs & SSRIs over a few weeks too, with only a slight periods of adjustment... mostly just increasing anxiety.

Everyone is different, but I would tentatively say that tapering over a month is probably ok since 2mg is a low dose. The main thing is that you are doing a proper taper.

Those 10% advocates take things a bit too far in my opinion. I think that sort of thing is only really relevant for people who have been at high doses for a very long time.

I was being treated for a misdiagnoses of bipolar and some paranoia.

I think i am just going to try and speed it up by making larger decreases slowly to see what i can tolerate. I cant be getting withdrawals with having to work. I did once try and split a 3mg in half once, and i could only sleep 4 hours, so insomnia would be a concern. A 1 month taper seems awfully fast to me. Even psych central advocates a 10% reduction, and then wait a period of time to see if withdrawals happen.

Thanks for all the responses
