Anybody have experience with this medication? I have details of the drug, and might have to utilize it for my chronic pain. I've just heard as many rumors and horror stories as facts, though.. always wondering about the urban legends.

Hi Sky,
I tried the Oxy a little over a year ago (20mg) and it was a little more than I could handle. It really spaced me out. What I'm taking now works very well. It's called Avinza and it's relatively new. It's a 12 hour timed release Morphine capsule. But it should only be taken if your pain is truly chronic. I still take Norco for breakthrough pain, but normally the Avinza is enough. It might be worth talking to your doc about? You can check it out on the web too. Greg ![]() "Beauty is truth, truth is beauty - that is all you know on earth, and all you need to know" |

the horror stories are usualy about kids who abuse it or take to much. it is a very addictive drug, even if you take it as prescribed. If you've tried litteraly every other med, just make sure yo uhave your doc start you on the smallest dose possible. and you've got to consider psych med interactions too. whats your pain from may i ask? Sky, I was on it and still have it for as needed - worked really well for me on the pain side. Not much could touch the pain, but the Oxcontin.
I fully approve of it. ![]() |

Tks for all your replies (more replies still accepted hehehe)
I have chronic neuropathic myofascial pain. I have been taking demerol for several years, and it has worked well for me. (it, too is considered highly addictive, yet I am not addicted.) I haven't a clue what the new medical pain mgmt doctor will suggest; I don't know what he will be able to suggest and what I might try, since I am so allergic to medications. (I cannot take even the generic Demerol.) I am not on any psychotropic medications. Yeah, I was told oxycontin will level out the ups and downs of the pain mgmt, but then, they said that about methadone too (which nearly killed me.) But if it does, and then I have, say, demerol , for the break through pain if I happen to try to "do" anything physical in life... it might be a good thing. meditation is a true way to connect to the Source

Sky,
Oxycontin scares the hell out of me because I have seen it screw up people's lives. My grandmother had knee surgery a few years ago and was put on it for the pain. She did not abuse the drug and took it exactly as perscribed and became addicted to it. When she finally ran out of the meds she went through withdrawl for days and I had to "help" her through it. It was one of the most horrible experiences of my life to watch her come off of the stuff. Maybe it was just my negative experience but that stuff is like the devil to me now. I do not recommend it to anyone. I think there are better drugs out there to deal with pain that do not do what Oxycontin does. Stay strong, Jessica You are in this snowglobe. Now they will eventually settle but they won't be the way they were before and they can never be that way again.

mostof the realy bad stories have usualy been about people or kids abising the med, or overdosing, or recreationally using it, using it strictly as prescribed usualy doesn't lead to addiction, however, you should look into your family history, hasanyone been an alcoholic, addicted to anyhting, do you have addictive habits? etc "don't kick the puppy" ~ j.e.p.

tks shakes, cleo
well, IF it's prescribed it will be by my new medical pain management doctor... and it will be for the long haul, replacing my demerol. No, no addictive behaviours in family... especially me... I have been on demerol since 95 and NOT addicted... I have chronic pain. The studies finally coming out are proving that ppl with chronic pain just don't get addicted... something about just replacing the chemicals in the body that normally fight pain (and I think unless you really have a screw loose, you don't go around smashing your hand just to have your body dump in the "feel good" endorphins.) Tks for your replies... just trying to psych myself up to a possible change. Didn't do well with one lately. But am also beginning Topamax, so, who knows? meditation is a true way to connect to the Source
