Has anyone heard of Seroquel working better than Klonopin for severe anxiety in combination with Prozac?

I have had GAD for decades. Long story short, for the past few months, I have been suffering from chronic daily panic. It lasts all throughout the day, everything is triggering, every task overwhelming. I am constantly running to the bathroom. I have to force myself to eat despite being nauseous. I end up vomiting at least once a day, etc. etc.

A month and a half ago, my doc put me on 10mg of Prozac. I have been increasing and am at 40mg for about 2 weeks, but no decrease in above panic. I take Klonopin 4 times a day at .25mg, which has zero to minimal effect.

I posted before about how my doc wanted me to go on Zyprexa. I talked to him and he strongly suggests I take Seroquel 25mg daily, in addition to the Klonopin 4 times a day and the 40mg Prozac.

I'm frightened by the number of meds that I am going to be taking, but also has anyone heard of Seroquel working better than Klonopin for severe anxiety? The doc said if the Seroquel seems to work, then I can taper off the Klonopin. Anyone have experience with Seroquel and Klonopin?

seroquel at 25mgs daily is basically a glorfied antihistamine. Very sedating, but doesn't do a whole lot.

Klonopin at 1mgs=about 20mgs of valium. Not a whole lot, considering the standard dose for valium back in the day was 30-40mgs and klonopin is often dosed at 1.5-3mgs/day.

Low dose zyprexa can help a lot of conditions. There's a pre-mixed combo, symbyax, now in generic, that's been used by a lot of people. its just prozac and zyprexa, together at last. of course, both zyprexa and prozac are now in generic, and its cheaper to fill the two separately. The problem there is weight gain and metabolic problems, plus sedation and all the typical major tranquilizer stuff.

some doctors still use low doses of good ole thorazine for anxiety. I don't know how I feel about all that, but thorazine and stelazine can both be used at low doses for anxiety without as much weight gain as they newer drugs, plus they're cheap.

hope this helps.

i didn't notice much effect from Seroquel on panic until I hit about 100 mg. And then, it effectively cut my panic in half. For me, Seroquel works way better than Xanax for long term anxiety relief. I still use Xanax for "emergencies" where my panic shoots really high for some reason.

Can't say about Prozac, but Lexapro and Seroquel 75mg/day have helped my anxiety quite a bit.

I very much wish that I could find something that worked for anxiety. Klonopin did absolutely nothing for me. Valium and Ativan both made me more depressed. SSRIs do as well. I can't take beta blockers because I'm severely asthmatic. I don't really know if Seroquel did anything for my anxiety levels because it made me sleep all the time and feel half-asleep even when I was awake. It's a slim possibility that a lower dose would have been different but my doctor at the time was determined that I take what he prescribed and not complain about it, or just stop seeing him.

I take Seroquel daily and Klonopin. Seroquel started helping me with my anxiety once I hit 100 mg. At 200 mg, even better. The Klonopin now is as needed (taken every 2 days typically, 1-2 pills at 0.5 mg). I used to take Klonopin multiple times per day, but since my Seroquel was raised, my pdoc tapered me down on Klonopin. I really do notice Seroquel made a big difference since I do not get as frequent panic symptoms the way I used to.

As a long term relief, yes, Seroquel is generally much safer for long-term use. Doctors aren't supposed to use benzos (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin etc.) as a long term solution.

I've tried propanolol before. It seems that my system just doesn't react to non-tranquilizers.

Seroquel is an anti-psychotic. Paxam (klonolpin) is a long term benzo. Paxam is stronger than valium and lasts longer. Is one better than the other? Kind of like trying to compare apples and oranges. They are different types of meds.

Each body will react differently to medications and it's pretty much a case of trial and error.

Both Valium and Klonopin are long acting. For many, Valium acts for a longer time, but it is individual.

Anyway, I noticed some people get calmer on antihistamines and antipsychotics. I know someone who could switch her Xanax for Vistaril. It seemed so weird for me because I ONLY get calmer from benzos and nothing else. Some people get calm from things like Remeron and Seroquel (different classes meds but very similar to antihistamines both) but I never understood that. They are lucky to have a much different body chemistry.

So if Seroquel can be calming.... maybe and maybe not. Depends on who you are.
