Its been 28 days today since i started prozac. I didn't feel any such symptoms ( dry mouth, increased thirst) at all before. And all of a sudden since yesterday my mouths constantly dry no matter how much water i drink. The weather is also changing out here. getting warmer every day. Summer's are about to begin. Wondering what is the most likely explanation for these symptoms.

Hi Ravdeep: Most antidepressants cause one to have a dry mouth which, I think makes one feel thirsty. I was on Prozac years ago, & also on Paxil at one point. Both gave me a dry mouth. I was always drinking water. The only antidepressant I ever took that didn't have this effect on me was Cymbalta.

Anti depressants make my mouth very dry. I drink lots of water. One of the fun facts that I didn't know until too late is that dry mouth is bad for your teeth. So drink lots, chew sugarless gum, and there is a spray/mouthwash/gel you can get at the pharmacy for dry mouth.
Thanks for this!

Hi Ravdeep, Like the others have posted, medication can definitely cause dry mouth. And when your mouth is drier, of course you will feel thirsty. I drink a lot of water.
Thanks for this!

I have the same experience. I drink tons of water. I noticed it being much worse over the past year since Prozac was added to my meds. I'm definitely going to try some of those dry mouth products. Really hope it works.
Thanks for this!

im worried about my dental health. Will drinking plenty of water and using moisturizing mouth wash help prevent tooth cavities? Or would it be better to just talk to my pdoc for changing the anti depressant? Any thoughts?

I can totally relate to this. I am on three meds that all cause dry mouth and find myself always drinking as much water as I can (I am at times fluid restricted due to kidney issues) and using the special mouth wash, toothpaste and gum. My dentist claims that doing so will help keep my mouth from drying out to the point of damaging my oral health. So far my teeth are looking and feeling good and I have been dealing with this dry mouth side effect for a few years now.
Thanks for this!

Is it possible that the intensity of the dryness decreases, maybe become manageable over time as my body adjusts to the medication?

I've been experiencing the same thing. I've been taking Prozac for the past 2-3 months, started at 20mg, then switched to 40mg a few weeks ago... been a lot more thirsty lately.
