Thinking about switching from seroquel, which i take only for sleep, to trazadone coz my appetite is unmanageable with seroquel. How is your experience with trazadone?

I don't like Seroquel because it's so powerful and is an anti-psychotic drug with potentially bad side effects. (I'll check to make sure I'm right on that.)

I now take Trazodone. It's not nearly as powerful and doesn't not me out like Seoquel.

I don't think either one is associated with weight gain for me.
Thanks for this!

Trazodone did not work for me for sleep. Never tried Seroquel.

I used Trazodone. I had no weight gain and slept well throughout the night. It did not make me feel sleepy, but if I laid my head down and closed my eyes, I was gone 'til morning. It worked well for me.
Thanks for this!

I've tried trazodone, Silenor, and Bellsomra, as well as a litany of otc stuff. Nothing has worked. I've maintained four hours of sleep going on four months now with no relief. It all started with a nasty mixed episode because I went off my bipolar meds. Still trying to get it under control. I will NEVER do THAT again!

I hope you find something that helps you.

I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble getting your sleep back to normal. I know how that feels. After everything we go through, We all deserve a good night's sleep. I know you said you haven't tried Seroquel, may I suggest you give it try. It's super effective in breaking even the worst of insomnia. Hope your sleep goes back to normal again. Stay positive.

The problem with Seroquel (for me) is that it caused me to gain weight. That said, I think a very low dose (25mg.) is helpful for sleep and probably wouldn't have major side effects.

I had a very frightening experience with Trazadone and won't take it again. I took the recommended dose and felt like I had overdosed...flashing lights when I closed my eyes, felt like my breathing was messed up, felt like I was going to pass out. I realize my experience was unusual because some people find Trazadone very helpful.

I thought that I should add that my dosage of Trazodone was 100mg at bedtime, in case that info is helpful.

It is helpful. Thank you. I'll ask my doc to put me on it when I see her next time.

By the way, I haven't met a psych med (except benzos) that does not cause weight gain.
Thanks for this!

I agree. Nor do I expect any psych med to be weight neutral. That's why I posted, "which causes less weight gain", rather than, "no weight gain".

I'm perfectly okay with the weight gain. It's the "amount of weight gain" I'm worried about. My weight has already increased by roughly 20 %. And I'm even willing to let it increase by another 5 %. But it has to stop and stabilize at
some point.
Thanks for this!

Neither trazadone (50mg) nor quetiapine (25mg) caused weight gain for me. When I changed my atypical antipsychotic from aripiprazole to quetiapine, I gained about 20 lbs. Granted, the quetiapine dose was much higher (400-600mg). Quetiapine 25mg has been the best sleep drug I've ever used, followed by doxepin at low doses (5-10mg).
Thanks for this!

A low dose of quetiapine would be okay but I take 500-60mg and just found out that's it has fried my thyroid and possibly had effects on my liver so I might have to go into hospital. It is a potent drug with serious side effects
