Weird Seroquel Congestion Side Effect

Hi everyone,

Has anyone here had problems breathing with Seroquel? Sort of similar to congestion? Or have you heard of such a thing? I've been on Seroquel for a long time, but it wasn't until going up on my dosage that I experienced this problem. Actually, even on a high dose, I didn't experience this until months later. Basically what I experience on high doses is congestion where I cannot breathe through my nose. It basically feels like my nose is closed up and that I can only breathe through my mouth. At times, it is kind of scary and makes it hard to go to sleep, because my heart beats fast. I get nervous about not breathing properly. I do have some history of sinus problems, but this felt different. I didn't have to blow my nose....it was just a closed up feeling. The heavy sedation at night makes it even worse.

My pdoc looked up "stuffy nose/congestion" and learned it was a side effect, but she never heard of that until she saw me recently. I experienced this on 600-800 mg. She reduced my dose to 400 to see if this still occurs. Most nights, I've been okay, but I feel it to an extent. There was one night so far that I experienced it though. It's only recently that I switched to 400 mg, so the jury is still out regarding whether this dosage change will work.

Does anyone here know about this? As I've said before, my pdoc just learned about this.

That sounds really uncomfortable and, like you posted, could feel scary.

I have never had that side effect from Seroquel, but you know...everyone is different.

when I briefly tried seroquel way back when, it dried my sinus out. that and the vivid nightmares had me looking to other drugs.

I haven't heard that about Seroquel but had it with Theralene. My nose was just shut and no air could pass. It was very uncomfortable. Also if you are forced to breathe only through your mouth it will get dry with cavities following quickly. Not fun.

Yes, I wake up and my mouth is so dry. I have been on Seroquel for a few years (3-4) and all of the sudden, I'm faced with these crappy side effects.

When i first started taking seroquel in the psych ward about 5 weeks ago my nose was all most completely blocked, I was on 50-100mg at the time but now on 150mg and it doesn't seem to happen anymore, The only thing that does happen now it restless legs.

I wish that with the dose increase the side effect would go away, but unfortunately, I had to decrease it to 400 mg....even though the higher level of Seroquel helped more. I am hoping that 400 mg is enough to keep me at "baseline," whatever that may be.

Sorry you are experiencing the restless legs...I get twitchy legs from it, but this was worse when I was on 600 mg and higher. So many side effects are listed as possibilities, which sucks.

My theory based on my personal experience is that the human body needs to adjust and eventually the congestion issue should fix it's self but not 100% sure as everybody will experience different side affects from different drugs.
