My problem tends to lie more along the lines of falling asleep just fine, but having sporadic times at which I wake up and struggle to fall asleep again.

I have used two different sleeping pills in the past and though I would have tried a non-prescription option, a very experienced pharmacist told me that it would be better to see a doctor about it.

What are some possible medications for this type of problem? I can cope without medication for most nights, but appreciate a proper rest every now and then, when it is bad.

Temazepam works well for me it's a benzo so your doctor might not prescribe it. If not low dose seroquel will do the trick.

I looked up Intermezzo and it is a fast acting type of Ambien at a lower dosage. Sounds nice I think, but... why don't they make a fast acting Ambien to begin with? Do they want people to toss and turn? LOL.

I like Melatonin. It's an OTC supplement you can find in the vitamins and supplements section and it works for me like a charm. I just pop one tablet from the bottle (or up to 3 if I'm feeling like I just want to get to sleep ASAP and be done with consciousness for a while), and off to dreamland I go. It usually takes half an hour to 45 minutes to take effect and when it does, boy howdy does it work.

Ambien usually knocks me out and I don't wake up in middle of the night.

Wished it worked for me. I can't fall asleep on it and when I finally do I get the worst nightmares.

When I had trouble staying asleep I saw a neurologist specialized in sleep disorders, and he prescribed a low dose of amitriptyline. It worked.

I don't recommend seroquel as a sleep medication especially if you are already on an antipsychotic, which looks to be the case. Not saying it can't be effective but the side effects aren't great.

I agree with discussing melatonin with your doctor. trazodone and doxepin are also a couple to consider

I have had sleeping pills for almost 10 years , each day, and I am glad that I can finally sleep without these pills nowadays ;-) However, when I really can't sleep I am glad I still have these pills, just for occasional use. I wouldn't recommend to use these pills each day. Tramadol worked for me. Originally an antidepressant, but at lower dosage, it works on sleep, especially for staying asleep through the night
It only has some side effects, I think you should take this medicine every day.
If you'd prefer usage occasionally, I would rather look at a benzodiazepine. Such as Oxazepam or Zolpidem.
Zolpidem works fast and you should sleep for about 8 hours. My experience is good. But do not use it daily, given the chance of addiction and you need a higher dose for the same effect within a couple of weeks after using it daily.
