I've been on Zoloft for about 16 years. Every time I try to stop--even when I taper very slowly--my depression and anxiety return. The last time I tried to stop, my decision was based on a concern that SSRIs can make depression worse over the long term. But I'm starting to think the risks of coming off are greater than the risks of staying on. Anyone else reconciled to being on SSRIs for life? Anyone else been on SSRIs for decades?

I've been on SSRIs since 1994, which feels like forever. I use it in conjunction with other meds and, yeah, I'm basically assuming I'm on them for life.

In researching about long term use making depression and anxiety worse, have you seen anything about maybe switching to another SSRI?

I've been on an SNRI since 1999, and and an SSRI since 2007. When we tried to reduce the SSRI last year, I had horrible anxiety. So while I'm not thrilled about it, I'm assuming I'm on them for life.

I've been on SSRI's since the mid-90's, except for a very brief (6 month) break last year.

I used to think I'd be on one SSRI or another all of my life, but the thing is, my body has changed, especially in my 50's. So I can foresee a time when I might not be on an SSRI.
Thanks for this!

I haven't seen any research on this but will take a look. Thank you.

After being on SSRI only 3 years I couldn't function at all without them. Tried for 3 more years to do without. I was so much worse off than before meds and it never evened out. I surrendered and realized the med had somehow destroyed my brain and I just have to keep taking it. Just to be where I was before meds. Seems unfair but.. that is life I guess.

I always remember that my symptoms started long before I started taking medications. Pure hell and that's why I sought treatment. When I'm off meds my original symptoms return with the same vengeance, so yeah...I'm happily on my medications for life.
