One of my docs said I can take nortriptaline with my Prozac. I've been taking celexa 20 and Prozac 40 for quite some time now, on my own, trying to balance the sedative effects of celexa with energizing prozac. I'm at a lose of what to do because I fear this may be harmful, although I feel it's doing pretty well.

I'm considering going to only Prozac and taking l tryptophan at night or something along those lines.

I don't know except for maybe possible side effects. I suggest you talk to a pharmacist and let your doctor know what you have in mind.

Are you talking to you pdoc about this? You seem to be tinkering around on your own a lot.

Both combinations can have seriously major drug interactions...but since you doctor know you and your history best I would follow their recommendations.
I don't think you're wise to fiddle around on your own with this...these are very potent drugs with serious side effects when combined.
Go to https://www.drugs.com/ and use the Interactions Checker at the top of the front page.

The main risk from taking 2 SSRI's is serotonin syndrome, Nortriptyline is usually considered less of a risk as it has more effect on norepinephrine than serotonin (still has some though).

I'd be cautious about taking tryptophan with a SSRI for the same reasons, particularly if it's 5HT.
Thanks for this!

Sometimes people do take 2 SSRI's, but I would be extremely careful doing so on your own because of the very real risk of serotonin syndrome. In addition, sometimes 2 SSRI's can have the effect of creating depression, rather than decreasing it.

hi. just from what ive observed, when 2+ antidepressants are used in the same person, docs seem to use drugs from different classes. so...ssri+remeron, ssri+wellbutrin, ssri+certain tca drugs, ssri+provigil ("off label"), etc...not ssri+ssri, tca+tca, etc.

other options include: low dose lithium, buspar, old school stimulants (ritalin, focalin, an amphetamine), a tranquilizer/neuroleptic, an antiepileptic drug (lamictal, trileptal, etc.), and I think some people benefit from adding in straterra.

hope this helps.
