Hi. I'm trying to counteract lithium weight gain by eating a healthy diet. But I don't think that's going to be enough. I've read that you should avoid strenuous exercise while taking lithium. Well, I'm sorry, but if I'm going to keep my weight under control I'm going to have to do that.
So what about those of you on lithium who are trying to manage your weight? Do you exercise? If so, how strenuously? In addition to helping maintain weight, I also know exercise has a positive affect on mood. Any thoughts? Thank you. |

I've taken 900 mg of lithium every day for years (maybe 10 or so?). I have not gained any weight, and over time have actually lost about 25 pounds very gradually without dieting, even though I drink way too much alcohol. I walk an hour each weekend morning.

If your going to exercise make sure you drink plenty of water. I was doing strenuous activities for two days. I did not drink enough water and ended up in the hospital with lithium toxicity.

I have not gained weight from lithium, but I do exercise while on it. I just need to bring extra water.

I gained about 15 pounds on it.
I was doing 30 minutes to an hour of cardio a day in July and I had no issues. |
