I'm gonna ask my doc during my upcoming visit to put me on gabapentin for anxiety. How has your experience been on it? It will go a long way in helping me decide if and what dosage to take..thanks in advance

Hi friend,
I was on gabapentin once upon a time. I don't remember the dose though. For me, I was put on it for anxiety and sleep prn. Sleep it did help, but anxiety it didn't seem to do much. (I have also been on a million different meds and my body seems to have a high tolerance for a lot of psych drugs) As far as sleep, I found that when I did take it consistently, I could no longer sleep without it, and that was why I eventually stopped it. Weight gain was not a problem for me on it. Good luck, hope you figure it out!

I currently take Gabapentin for anxiety. I'm on 300 mg a day and have been for 2 months now. I haven't gained or lost any weight. So I would say it's weight neutral

I would say weight neutral, though I've coincidentally gained 10-12 pounds in 2 months since I started taking it. I also started taking gabapentin for physical, not mental health reasons, so I also had a decrease in activity level. About 4 months ago I started a new, more sedentary job. The past couple months there have been a ton of snacks/sweets at work that I've had a lot of trouble resisting. Problems with co-workers at the new job also leads to stress eating, which tends to be sweets, junk food & fast food. Overall, I don't think it's related to gabapentin (Neurontin).

I would also say neutral. Weight gain isn’t even listed as a side effect. Not on any of the sources I explored.

It has been weight neutral for me. I take 300 mg in the AM and 600 mg in the PM. I notice that it reduces my anxiety a little, but possibly makes me a little sleepier. It doesn't seem like a substitute for a benzo for me though. My formula tends to be my mood stabilizer + antipsychotic med + Gabapentin, and a benzo every other day (sometimes more, sometimes less) to reduce anxiety and take the edge off even more so. The reason my pdoc suggested more Gabapentin at night, was to attempt to help me relax more before sleep and help with sleep in general. Overall, it's a good med for me. It has very minimal side effects for me, if even that.

No weight gain but my reaction speed slowed so much I managed to get into odd accidents on it. If you drink for example you can have a slowed reaction speed and somehow be aware of it. I was totally unaware of this on gabapentin, walking, objects would just appear in front of me and I would walk into them.
I don't think any other person had this though.

It didn’t cause weight gain for me.
Man, these pills are POTENT for me. I have tried this side by side with Vicodin, (I had an ear ache recently), and gabapentin is more pleasant for me. I only need 3 pills per day. I’m allowed 6. I tried going to 2 pills per day but had breakthrough anxiety. |
