So I’ve been on Prozac for about 2 weeks now, and I have had really bad dry mouth. I originally took it at night, but switched it to morning because I read how apparently the mouth glands or whatever that produces saliva isn’t as active at night, and if this is a side effect you, take it in the morning. Boy was I wrong though. If I take it at night, I could at least sleep it off. I mean, it was awful to have dry mouth at night because that’s when I am most active, but my dry mouth has made me not able to concentrate. I’ll drink like 1.5 L of water, and still have a dry mouth. I have been chewing sugarless gum all day, and still have a dry mouth. I bought some mouth spray today to help deal with it, but so far, I’m unsure as it seems to make me feel like I need to go to the bathroom a lot. I’m not 100% sure about it though, I need to wait more days.
I know that other antidepressants and lithium cause dry mouth as a side effect, and I’m wondering how others cope. My mouth feels like the Sahara desert even though I’m drinking lots of water and chewing gum and using spray. Thank you.

Thank you. The mouth moistened I bought was Biotene. I find it funny, as the company that made this actually made Paxil and Wellbutrin. I know that Wellbutrin is common to have dry mouth as a side effect. I find this quite ironic.

Oh, yes. I'm sorry it doesn't help. When I used to go to the pdoc my mouth would get so dry I couldn't get my lips over my teeth. :/

I think it does help for like 20 minutes or so... I’m sorry.

I have dry mouth from meds also. My dentist gave me Lubricity. It works better than Biotene in my opinion.
One thing to watch for-dry mouth can cause tooth decay. I found this out the hard way-I had a bunch of cavities. My dentist also gives me prescription toothpaste which has helped with that. I was mad that my pdoc did not mention that my teeth would need extra care with the dry mouth thing. |
