I posted this in another forum here but this is probably the best place (I'm new and didn't know of this board)...

My pdoc mentioned she's thinking of adding Epival/Valproate to try to fight off my depression. I'm on Latuda and Lithium and in the midst of an 8-month-long depression.

Anyone have experience with Epival/Valproate - the side effect of pancreatitis sounds scary!

I was on Depakote (the brand name of Valproate) for awhile, it helped my moods a lot. I didn't have any bad side effects, the only thing I didn't like was the 20lbs I gained on it. Gaining 20lbs is one thing but it was unacceptable in my mind because I had already gained 80 on Invega.

I wouldn't be scared of it, your doctor will monitor your blood levels of the drug just be sure to let them know if you have any side effects that are troubling you. Lots of people do well with it. It usually is geared more towards bringing down manic episodes in Bipolar, but it is a mood stabilizer so it could be helpful for depression to.

I now take Trileptal.

I'm been on Depakote 1000mg for almost a year and recently added 250mg of valproic acid.
Doesn't work as well as lithium did for me, but no weight gain, no side effects. You do need periodic blood work, but you do that for lithium anyway.
