Hi, Could you all please give me your opinions as to which anti-depressant is most effective for combating my anger issues. I tried Prozac and it was pretty good. Now I'm not on any SSRI but am considering going back on Prozac or maybe trying Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil... ?? Any thoughts.

Thanks,

That's interesting. I work on an acute inpatient unit for bipolar I/other psychotic disorders and for straight anger or anger and impulse control, I've never known SSRI's to be used for that. But then again, I'm biased both because our patients by and large can't take antidepressants due to exacerbating mania and also because doctors here traditionally prescribe drugs like Risperdal/Depakote
Thanks for this!

I was taken off all antidepressants and prescribed Bipolar medications instead.
Irritable mood, anger and rage are among the primary diagnostic criteria for mania and hypomania.
They work very well for me for these issues.

I remember when the SSRI's were new meds. They were often prescribed for anger management. I wonder how many people with bipolar disorder where made worse by an SSRI back in the late '80's - mid '90's?

Celexa is often used for irritability/reactivity.

Lamictal has helped with my anger. I also don’t have that many side effects on it either.

Hmm not sure seeing as the antidepressant I was on, Lexapro, gave me anger issues like I have never had before because it put me in a mixed episode. Just keep an eye out for increased anger if you take an antidepressant, because it could be making you hypomanic if that happens. Wish I had realized earlier.

I can tell you one that, while was ultimately helpful for me, started out rocky as it made me pissier than normal and I'm not really known for being a ray of sunshine on a good day — Bupropion or Wellbutrin
