I see many people on here struggling to lose weight on seroquel and are frustrated with not being able to lose weight no matter what they try.
I would like to share what has worked for me to help me lose the weight while on the drug and hopes that it helps other people. I am on 400mg of seroquel at night. I first gained about 60 Ibs rather fast on seroquel. I went from about 150 or so to 210 lbs. What worked for me to started losing the weight was to go on a diabetic drug called Metformin which prevents insulin resistance and works to counter act the weight gain side effects of the seroquel. I take 500mg of Metformin ER twice a day. This helps prevent any new weight gain and also helps you to lose weight in combination with a good diet and exercise plan. The diet plan that really worked for me was Nutrisystem. I lost 6 Lbs my first week on it. And am steadily losing 1-3 Lbs a week on it. You can sign up for a plan and they usually give discounts. So you can get a months supply of food for about $330. And you can keep that rate for every months worth of food thereafter. So using Metformin ER and Nutrisystem together works at losing the weight. Also good regular exercise. I just walk fast for 30mins 3 times a week or so. I thought I would share this members here who have been struggling to lose weight on the seroquel. hope it helps. Metformin ER really does not have any side effects either at least for me. |

What I cannot understand is how to get a GP or a pdoc to prescribe Metformin or any prescription that helps weight loss. They just blow me off. I spoke with my pdoc about it yesterday; she was vague and not encouraging.
I'm seeing my GP next week and will be asking her about weight loss meds. I'll be surprised if she offers anything. I have gained well over 100 lbs. on Seroquel, and I genuinely fear for my health. I'm almost off the stuff, but losing 100lbs is going to be next to impossible without something besides diet and exercise. My thought at this point is, if no one will prescribe a med I'll find a supplement with ephedrine-like herbs in it. I'd take ephedra, but it's illegal in the States. An irony, since ephedra has the same potential dangers as Seroquel does. I figure that the pharma companies didn't see much opportunity to score cash with ephedra, so it was pulled off the market. |

I experienced the same thing as well. I had to try several Doctors before I found one that was open and knowledgeable about the subject to prescribe the Metformin. The other doctors just told me to do diet and exercise. But based on my research I did not think that was enough. So my advice would be to keep trying to find a doctor who would prescribe it. |

I was placed on metformin too. I had put on 50lbs in a two month period. While I did not experience weight loss on the drug I did stop packing it on.

yes I believe it helps prevent more weight gain. And also seems to help prevent more weight gain from APs. I believe it also helps your body be able to start losing weight if you are on APs.

I am diabetic. The first thing my Endo did was pull me off of metformin. It is a dangerous drug especially for younger people.
