I loved pristiq. Too pricey for me though so switched to zoloft as other SNRI's made me really anxious. I have just had to double my initial dose since I had fallen back into depression and anxiety. Its working so far as I could tell and seemed to help almost immediately.

Hi. the most effective antidepresants --for me-- were Wellbutrin and Tofranil. I don't know why doctors always go to the Elavil when a tricyclic is indicated...Tofranil is rough, but I don't think its as densely sedating as Elavil, and I was instructed to take the whole dose at night, which made dosing easier.

zoloft made me both apathetic and angry, so its kind of a no-go --for me--. celexa at a reasonable dose was a better choice when I was all sortsa agitated and such, but after about 6 months...I was too apathetic to make it a permanent part of my life. :-(

one thing...tricyclics are lethal in overdose, have a number of serious drug-drug interactions, and (according to a former psych) can have negative effects on the heart if taken at a full dose, long term. The newer drugs are far less toxic, even in overdose, but...they carry their own adverse effect profiles, too.

sorry about this. do you have good insurance? some people report wonderful experiences with Provigil or Nuvigil. They're both very $$$ without coverage, and many plans are -not- big on covering them for psych indications, but I thought I'd mention it. Less addictive, less euphoric than the tradtional stimulants. I think one can actually get refills, if the prescriber is OK with that.

sorry you're suffering. some people do well on an ssri+wellbutrin...I seem to recall reading that Lexapro+Wellbutrin is a somewhat popular combination.

hope things get better for you. :-)

me, yet again. rexulti is an 'atypical' neuroleptic/tranquilizer/'antipsychotic.' it (and drugs in that class...) are sometimes the best thing ever, especially in psychotic depression and/or agitated depression. other times...not so much.

a former psych once brought up amoxapine, for me. It is a tricyclic, in the same class as the Elavil, and it has some tranquilizer/neuroleptic action, too. I've never taken it, but I've read that -when- it is effective, it tends to lift mood fairly quickly, compared to other antidepressants.

any time a neuroleptic is in the mix, there's a risk of tardive dyskinesia and a number of other serious, sometimes permanent adverse effects. There's a test...The AIMS Test...to check for the early signs of tardive dyskinesia. Prescribers are supposed to have the test done every 6 months I think, maybe annually...but very few people actually receive a proper AIMS evaluation, in "the real world."

:-)

For depression I found Effexor (Venlafaxine) to be helpful. Worked better for me than Zoloft or Prozac.

Elavil for me worked well it’s sedating so if you have problems sleeping you can kill two birds with one stone, it’s an older drug so you have to take it two too sometimes three times a day while taking the largest portion of the dose at night.

The only two anti depressants that I can tolerate are Remeron and Wellbutrin. Or at least out of all of the ones that I have tried. SSRI's and SNRI's are a no go for me.
