Does it lower your appetite and if so, what dose gives this effect?

I haven't noticed that it has lowered my appetite and I have been taking it for years. I just think it is weight neutral, which means it doesn't cause weight gain like some other antidepressants.
Thanks for this!

In the beginning it curbed my hunger and gave me a ton of energy at 150mg. At 300mg same effects which lasted about two weeks then I settled in. Now I don't think it does anything but act as an anti depressant with no side effects for me. Oh I had one side effect I quit smoking on it.

Congratulations on quitting smoking! I know - it is used to fight addictions.

didnt have any weight gain or loss on it. could be because i took it with an 'atypical' tranquilizer all the way thru. its a 2nd or 3rd line drug for add/adhd, and it did help concentration for me...

there are other, more effective drugs to help with weight loss. with zyprexa on board, i would think metformin might be a viable option. if its really bad, some doctors still provide the old school diet pills, to some people.

I can't imagine any doctor prescribing any of the diet drugs that were found to be dangerous. The current drug approved by the FDA for weight loss, Contrave, happens to be a mixture of nalaxone (used for addictions) and bupropion--Wellbutrin! I never tried it but Wellbutrin didn't work to curb my appetite beyond the first couple months, at any dose.

phentermine is still pretty popular. i have an acquaintance who was prescribed that along with a --strict-- diet+exercise program for over 1 year...no big deal. i mean, she lost lots of weight, etc., but the prescription itself was just a part of the program, which is how the diet pills are supposed to be prescribed+used.

I bet I would get manic on phentermine, so it is out of the question.

As for Contrave - I tried on my own, combining Wellbutrin and Naltrexone prescribed by my psychiatrist, but Naltrexone made me depressed, so I had to quit. I am now taking 12.5 mg Topamax and it helps curb the appetite, so I am quite happy. I am still taking Wellbutrin, thinking that it would not hurt.

hi, me again. maybe a different neuroleptic/tranquilizer/"antipsychotic" ?

its Abilify for me...we appear to be life partners, whether I like it or not. :-(

but...you have options. geodon, perphenazine (watch the dose, carefully), latuda, abilify and friends (rexulti, and that v-one), loxapine (watch the dose, please), and...

there's an old combo pill, Triavil. Elavil+perphenazine. some psych docs do not go for the fixed combo pills, others do...anyway, its been used forever, helps some people.

metformin? diabetes II drug, generic. can reduce weight gain and help w/ metabolic nastiness that comes w/ 'treatment,' sometimes, in some people.

add prozac? symbyax is still around...zyprexa+prozac, together in perfect harmony. adding prozac in separately means 2 prescriptions, 2 co-pays (i dont know your insurance situation, clearly), but is often less expensive and gives the prescriber (and you) more control over how much you take.

antidepressants tend to increase neuroleptic blood levels.

now and then, those with mood problems do OK on Keppra. I don't know anything about it, I just knew of someone who took it and did reasonably OK, for a while (very helpful, I know).

sorry about all this. :-(

My youngest kid has epilepsy and is on Keppra. I also heard good things about it being used off label for mood stabilization, but currently I have a very demanding job and cannot afford experimenting - Zyprexa makes me completely asymptomatic and allows to work at this pace and with this level of concentration. Elavil in the past caused severe weight gain. Other antipsychotics were tried and did not help (either made me depressed or could not control elevated mood). I do not need Prozac because I am not depressed on Zyprexa alone - I am trying Wellbutrin purely for weight management. Apparently it has started to cause sleep issues - I woke up wide awake in the middle of the night and had to take another 5 mg Zydis to go back to sleep - so I am halting this trial, but a very low dose of Topamax (currently 12.5 mg, eventually will try to titrate up very slowly) does help to control the appetite. I am very thankful for it.

Thanks for all of your suggestions!

hi. :-)

if you have quality insurance, modafanil is sometimes used for people on tranquilizers.
