Can anyone please recommend a anticonvulsant for racing thoughts. Anyone tried a medication that brought about stillness in your mind?
Also if the medication can also help promote weight loss that would be great as well. I am currently on lithium and seroquel. |

I am not a doc of course but seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic. I use lamictal and it has been a life saver. I do take an AAP but that is geodon and I take that at night.

trileptal, maybe? if your doctor thinks trileptal is an option, be sure to get your blood sodium checked -before treatment begins- and again after I think its 8-12 weeks. kind of a big deal...a lot of psych doctors are slack about monitoring with trileptal. oh, and..if it is an option, try to work with your doctor and remember: start low (dosage), go slow(ly)...don't rush up to a high dose, if possible.

It can decrease sodium levels sometimes which is why it's important to get the levels checked as the poster above said.
I take trileptal and it's been amazing for me. It actually stopped the racing thoughts and manic symptoms. I used to take depakote but switched to Trileptal due to issues with weight gain. It's been better for me that either Lithium or Depakote honestly

the data on trileptal i think mostly comes from small studies...it was never fda-approved for any mood disorders. having said that...
for some people, it provides stability w/ fewer adverse effects than lithium, depakote, etc. i took it because depakote+my 'atypical' = misery, but trileptal+'atypical'= OK. each individual is different, of course. |

@pat86 I take 1200 mg, it hadn't caused weight gain for me. I actually lost the weight I gained from Depakote

I have heard of Topamax mentioned by other members but have read it has really bad side effects and is often called dopamax.

I was put on 200mg Topamax in rehab for addiction cravings (I don't even have cravings but they like to put everyone on it) and I stopped taking it before I saw my outpatient psychiatrist because it made me feel stupid and my psychiatrist said that it would have made me lose like 20 IQ points if I was still on that dose.

I'm going to endorse trileptal as well. I've been on it for years and it drastically cut down the racing thoughts and anger. And it's weight neutral, I didn't gain anything on it. I'm up to 1800mg.

how did they effect you? I tried many stimulants and many of them made me angry or have angry thoughts all day. I wonder if those of us with bi polar are more susceptible to anger and angry thoughts. |
