I have had terrible physical pain for a week and loss of appetite and this weekend my anxiety has been through the roof. I just took a Xanax and I feel like I’m going to have a panic attack. Can Xanax stop working all of a sudden and cause increased anxiety? Can it also cause stomach pain and constipation?

hi. the benzodiazepines...are just sedatives. xanax is a potent, fast acting one. i've had heightened anxiety from xanax, too...i think it has some odd properties not shared with most other sedatives. anyway...

there's also disinhibition, and shrink once told me that the high potency benzodiazepines can trigger dissociative states in some people, under certain conditions. so...

wish i knew what to tell you. people can also turn hostile and violent on benzodiazepines, so...you're not the only one, not that knowing that will make it any easier for you.

I got weird on both diazepam and Xanax when I first tried them, to the point it took 20 years to dare trying diazepam again. Xanax got a lot better for me quickly. But I never felt anxious on them, then I would have stopped immediately. All benzos aren't the same and some people have paradoxical reactions.

I hope my doctor will just leave everything as it is when I see him on Wednesday. If I tell him my anxiety is bad he will just try to put me on some mood stabilizer. I have already had to refuse several things he’s tried to put me on including Abilfy and Zoloft. I absolutely will not take weight gaining meds. I took a Xanax this afternoon and it didn’t do much. So I’m kind of in a catch 22. Hopefully I can just talk out my anxiety with my therapist.

This also happened with Ativan where it just stopped working all of a sudden and made my anxiety worse.
