Is anyone on Seroquel? What is it being used for besides sleep?

I take it. It helps with my anxiety. I wouldn't take it as a purely sleep aid - too many side effect risks.

Thanks. I was not subscribed seroquel for sleep but it knocks me out so bad I hate taking it. Whenever I read about it they all talk like it is a sleep pill.
My T says it helps stabilize my moods which may be true. I'm not sure at this point. Thank you for the confirmation. |

The sleep dose is 25mg or 12.5mg. Very low. That said, I was on a regular dose of Seroquel for whatever...antipsychotic, mood stabilizer...and I gained over 100lbs while on it. That has caused a myriad of health issues. I wouldn't recommend Seroquel, personally. The stuff is dangerous for health.

I have on and off it many times it was the only thing that helped but I also gained 100 pounds and had to stop it. I think I was on 300mg. It didn’t help with my sleep. I will never take it again.

At the highest I believe my dosage was 300 or right around that. The lowest, 12.5mg.

I currently take 600 mg of Seroquel XR (extended release) and have taken that dose (give or take 100 to 150) for about six years now. At least 350 mg for two years prior to that. Though it does help me sleep, I take it primarily for bipolar mania, and to a lesser degree depression and anxiety. It is one of the top four medications I have taken.
I find the XR to be friendlier than the regular (iR) in terms of sedation, weight gain, and other side effects. These last eight years, I have gained some weight, but not an excessive amount, like others. I can't blame all weight gain on Seroquel XR. My age, genes, and other factors have played a part, too. The last time I weighed myself (a month ago), I was 18 lbs overweight. Considering that at one point 19 years ago I was only 6 lbs less than I am now, I don't see that as that bad. Note that 19 years ago, I had not been diagnosed with a mental illness yet, and was not taking meds...and was 30 years old, not almost 50. One notable negative that Seroquel XR likely brings me is bad blood work results. However, it is possible that age, genes, and lifestyle contribute to that, as well. Most in my family had/have weight and other issues, and most all never took psych meds. In fact, I have been among the trimmer people in my family. Point is, we all have unique reactions to meds. One person may gain 100 lbs on the same one another gains little or nothing from. Last edited by Soupe du jour; Mar 29, 2021 at 08:07 AM. |

Wow. I know i have gained a ton of weight this year but that was my fault. It sounds like i should just get off of it. I appreciate everyone's experinces. It does help with my sleep. I am on 50mg. I can't imagine going any higher.

I was prescribed the 12.5 mg dose a few years ago to help with sleep. I did sleep on it, but it was a strange sleep. It was sort of like my body was asleep but my brain wasn't. I was lucky I was on leave from work because when I woke up I felt groggy for several hours. I only took it for a few works because I didn't like feeling out of it most of the morning.

Isn't it used for bipolar to try to keep mania from occurring? I know I was prescribed it as a person with bipolar, and my pdoc said nothing about it helping me sleep--but it did knock me out.
I would think it's an awfully strong med to use just to help someone sleep. |

I'm taking Seroquel, forgot the dosage. I take it at night because it is a known sleep-inducer. I take it as an anti-psychotic. And as help for sudden episodes of mania or depression. It seems to have really brought around my stability to a clear and concise -- you really might get it. I felt enthralled when she suddenly put me on the Seroquel. I might have gained some weight, but I lost it and more! This psychiatrist is not a dimwit. She seems to know exactly what to do with the medicine and exactly what to say to me to put me at a safe and happy point. I cannot wait to just see where it ends up. I think the medicine does make me extremely hungry though.

I was on it for a bit. A couple months. I think I gained about 30 pounds. I was put on one med then taken off it a few weeks later and put on another weight gaining med. It wasn’t a good hospital and at the treatment centers I was at no one seemed concerned about my weight gain besides me. I remember being weighed one time in treatment and I went from 130-160 in a couple months. I complained to the nurse but he just dismissed my concern and said “whatever” this went on for awhile and by 2015 I had gained 130 pounds. Before meds I was 104 pounds. Now I’ve lost a lot of the weight but I have some eating disorder traits as a result of all that weight. My brother before meds was probably about 140-150. Now he’s close to 300 pounds. Never had an issue before with food or weight.

I didn’t realize that weight gain could be so prolific with Seroquel. I’ve been taking it for almost a year now and haven’t had any weight gain or other negative physical side effects. I take 150mg at night as a mood stabilizer and then 25mg PRN throughout the day for anxiety. Overall I feel like it’s helpful. I’m glad I tried it again; I took it first in the hospital a couple years ago and I slept for almost 24 hours. Just waking up for meals.
