I am hoping to get some advice re a possible replacement prescription for the respirdal I am taking.I have taken respirdal previously for psychosis.Presently,I am taking a low (1mg.)dosage per day for anxiety and insomnia.I wonder if there is anything that might replace the respirdal that has a less sedating effect and no weight gain.I find that the drug helps me to slow my thinking and to sleep but ,even if I split the dose,I'm so sedated that I can't think straight at work and no matter how little I take,I gain weight.I assume that this is due to the fact that it slows my metabolism and I know that many antipsychotics do have weight gain as a side effect.Surely, though, there must be something else that would help with the sleeplessness and anxiety without the ongoing side effects?I don't consider myself to be overly vain but I'm really bothered by the excescive weight gain.Any insight into the reaction to the respirdal or suggestions of alternatives would be GREATLY appreciated.Thanks.Jill.

J4T - Ask your doctor if he/she thinks Seroquel™ (quetiapine) would be an option for you. There is usually very little, if any, weight gain associated with it's use. Seroquel, initially may cause some excess sedation, but a large part of that disappears as your body adjust to the drug.

I hope that this is of some help - Cam

I took Risperidol and gained 25 pounds! I take pride in my appearance and was very upset by the weight gain so I stopped taking it.
