So after a worrisome allergic reaction to the Lamictal I was prescribed for Bipolar II, I got off that and now my psychiatrist gave me a prescription for Trileptal. He said there are no dangerous skin allergies like with Lamictal, but I read on the Trileptal website that it can cause Stevens-Johnson Syndrome too. I'm nervous that the same thing will happen. He's starting me on 300 mg and that seems high.
What are other people's experiences with Trileptal? Is it helpful for Bipolar? Are the side effects tolerable? Does it seem safe to be trying another drug that could cause SJS? Thanks. |

i haven't used the trileptal but i am on lamictal and it sounds like your doc may have pushed it too much. i started on 25mg and up from there. sometimes we know too much about drugs by reading the side-effects(i do too) but i'll keep my fingers crossed for you, that this will work. 300mg does sound like alot doesn't it? good luck...pj56.......

I was on it for a year-- I was on 1200 mg. The initial side effects were tolerable-- dull headache, some stomach upset. However, as my dose went up, I would have weird side effects that would start about 20 minutes after taking the drug and last for about 30 minutes-- I would feel totally stoned, when I moved my head it seemed like everything was moving along with me, and my tongue would feel a little numb. However, it was tolerable because it was temporary.
This drug did not help me at all. It is not a 1st line treatment for bipolar and is normally used in conjunction with another mood stabilizer. The only reason I was on it was because it was my first mood stabilizer and I was scared to try anything that would give me crazy side effects. |

I take both Lamictal and Trileptal. I have had no problems with either. The one problem is that trileptal can make you sleepy. So I don't know if you take it at night or what but it is something to be aware of.

I take Trileptal 600mg for Bipolar II. It seems to work well as far as making me less irritable. I had a bad depression week and so the pdoc started me on Lamictal 25mg. I only just started the Lamictal a few days ago though. No side effects so far. I haven't had any side effects at all with the Trileptal. SJS is really a rare condition and usually occurs when a drug is titrated up too quickly. If you're overly concerned about it, talk to the doc and see what he/she has to say. Personally I'm very happy with Trileptal both regarding the lack of side effects and how well it works. Good luck whatever you decide.

thanks for the replies! I've been on trileptal for a few weeks now, no bad reaction like I had with the lamictal. It seems to help with my anxiety and sleep problems, so I think i'll be sticking with it.
