I'm bipolar. A couple of weeks ago, during a mixed manic attack, I was put on 900 mg of lithium, 10 mg of abilify, and 750 mg of depakote. While my symptoms have reduced a hundred fold, I still have problems sleeping, and am still somewhat hyper. I saw my doc this past week, and he told me to wait another week.... which is almost up. Any idea of how long these 'episodes' last? Anyone?

Medicines begin working as soon as you take them. How long it takes to build to a therapeutic level, for each patient, is up to the patient's system, and how long it was disfunctional.
Sounds like you're on the right track!

Thanks for the replies! I agree that I am on the right track; I was just kinda hoping it would be a shorter one :-)

Hi whyld...I take abilify and it took several weeks for it to kick in...I don't know about the other meds. Everybody is a little different, so hopefully you will not be waiting much longer. Good luck--hang in there.

Ugh--it took me a YEAR to get the right combo of meds...so many side effects or the meds didn't work. Hang in there.--Suzy

Bipolar disorder can be difficult to stabilize, and taking longer than a year to find that right combination/dosing of medications is not unusual. Times of great stress can alter your body chemistry and cause you to have to go through finding the right combo all over again. (Thus it's important to work in therapy on maintaining calm and good responses.)
Good wishes!

Thanks again for the replies. Things are finally beginning to look up. My meds are being tweaked with, and I'm liking the results. I was told it could take a couple of more months (ugh) , but I could live with the changes I feel now.

Dont we all wish the full effect of the med would kick in the day we took it.

The lithium is a hard one. They have to do blood work periodically to check your liver function and to make sure it is working at a therapeutic level.
Good luck! Dee

The average time is 1 Month - but can take as long as 3 months to feel the full effects of the medicine.
