It really depends on the individual case. Most of the time its not forever, but is at least a year or a few years.

I have been on and off medication for 2 years now, and have realised i'm better on it for the time being. Whether that be for 5 years or so.

Its probably best to ask your doctor what they think, or also how you feel when you're off medication.

No, if you don't want to.

Even schizophrenics who choose to go on medication, don't have to take it forever.

My pdoc has told me that I'll probably be on medication long term if not for life. Apparently each depressive episode you have increases your likelihood of having another, and I've had five major depressive episodes. She says she'll consider taking me off meds if I remain completely depression free for a period of two years.

I've been on meds I guess now a little over 7 years, and aside from some of the side effects they don't bother me too much.

I don't like the idea of being on them forever - but I recognize that my brain chemsitry may just be wired such that I do need them.

No one HAS to do anything. Taking medication is a choice you make, so the answer is no you do not need to take something forever. But I think what you might really be asking is if you need to take medication to control your conditions forever. That can only be answered on an individual basis and it can be very difficult to answer. Conditions/symptoms often change throughout a lifetime. Your doctor is probably the best one to ask because he/she knows your individual situation.

I don't like to here the term drugs and forever put in the same sentence. But some people will take some forever, and if it makes you function in a positive way, than maybe its not so bad.

I was on Prozac for years, close to 7 I think. I stopped all my meds when I wanted to see what I was like without them. I had taken many, and many combinations and dosages. Still had depression so I decided to start from scratch. Now I just do therapy.
