If you are looking for an OTC option, I found Tylenal PM to work reasonably well.

I find nitrazepam works well but like most sleepers will only work if used no more than three nights a week or you become tollerent of them & they will stop working. So I alternate with phenergan a antihistermine that also helps sleep. Between the two of them I manage to get reasonable sleep.

Trazadone will knock you out in 30 minutes or less. It's also classed as an antidepressent.......

Ativan works well for me, but I try not to take it everyday. I take it as little as possible. I don't want to be dependent on it. I sleep better with them and don't remember nightmares. Klonopin works too, but it takes longer to work (1 hour vs. 20-30 min. for Ativan).

And Blue, I've only talked to you a few times in chat but I want to say I know people twice your age with only half of your maturity!

You might try melatonin. It is purchased over the counter and the usual dose is 1-3 mg. Good luck!

I use Ambien but it is a prescription medication.

melatonin is great if it works for you, because you can take it all you want and not worry about dependence i believe. though i have also heard that high doses are the same as not taking it at all because your body just recognizes it as excess and flushes it out. But you know, look into it, don't just listen to my rumor mongering

i used it for a while but in fact it's pretty mild, i think. i don't think it would do the job for serious nightmares, but who knows. no harm in trying it.

I also use melatonin and it usually works pretty well, plus you wake up and arent very groggy. There are times that i do have dreams, etc so although its worth trying you would have to see how it works for you. You can get it at drug stores.

also,my boyfriend takes ambien when needed and it does work well, i have tried it however you need to take it on an empty stomach AND be in bed and ready to go to sleep because it makes you really goofy so be careful.

Dear Brookie

Fifty mg of vitamin B6, taken about one hour before bedtime, is a great sleep aid. It is a coenzyme, in the production of serotonin.

For more details, on sleep and serotonin metabolism, please see my response to the following post, here on PC:

http://forums.psychcentral.com/showthread.php?t=78287

Please, don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have regarding, i.e., here or by PM.

Wishing you a good nights sleep, each and every night,

Larry
