My pdoc keeps pushing it on me that I get back on risperdal...I really don't want to. I was on it for a little when I was 14. He says it will help control my mania along with various other things but I hate the side-effects. It's starting to seem that it's my only choice....

Anyone else on risperdal? Is it as bad as I remember?

I took 0.75mg Risperdal for years. I didn't have any side effects from it. My anxiety got bad again and it was increased to 1mg recently. Again I don't notice any bad side effects.

Everyone is different though. I know some people lactate on it.

I take 3 mg of risperidol and find it really helpful. I'm one of the unlucky people who gets lactation as a side effect and it's really messed with my periods. But really I can deal with that, and being on it made a huge difference to my mental health.

But if you don't like the side effects with risperidal, why not discuss another anti-psychotic with your pdoc? There are several atypical antipsychotics in the same class as risperidal that might work for you without the same side efffects.

i've been on risperdal about 3 times, and each time it worked differently. first it worked fine, kept the hallucinations at bay. then a month later i noticed weight gain, and not being able to walk as fast as i usually did without getting out of breath.

the second time it didn't work, but didn't have any side effects either.

the third time, it didn't work i think, but felt physically bad whilst taking it. after i stopped (risperdal was started at the hospital, and as soon as i got out i weaned off on it on my own - not something i would advise anyone to do, but it was just that horrible)

well - that is just my experience so it may be different from you. did it help at all when you took it before? even despite of the side-effects? maybe they won't be so bad this time.
