I was recently Rx'd Somnote AKA Chloral Hydrate for insomnia. I've had this problem since I was 6 years old (im 20) and my lack of sleep throws everything out of whack.
I will stay up for 3 days, though ill feel great and get alot of cleaning and schoolwork done. I'm not elated or delusional, but I am a bit dysphoric and out of it and not in control of what I am doing.
I've been given the Dx of Bipolar II (which I agree with) by some and just been labeled with a generic 'mood disorder' by others. I'm taking lamictal along with wellbutrin and abilify + the somnote.
I have never even heard of this drug (somnote) until I was given it, and I am pretty obsessive about researching meds since I am due to be a med student in the near future, and I'm obsessive in general. ANy of you have any experience/thoughts on it?

I take anywhere from 1500mg to3000mg at once. And nothing.... I've tried the following for sleep: klonopin, ativan, trazedone, ambien, seroquel, temazepam (i tihnk) and some others.

It seems like I am running out of options. My insomnia makes my suicidal tendencies amplify to such a dangerous degree when I dont sleep because I detach and life in some sort of fog. I, personally, do think this is the hypomania, but reguardless, I CANT SLEEP EVER.

Here lies another problem: my history. I have tried to OD on every single sleeping pill (and almost all others) I have ever been rxed. So my doc doesnt have much faith/hope for me. And I'm still doing it because I cant fix myself. But my demise is my problem ey?

Anyways...does anyone else have this problem this severe?
I would love any input available Somnote anyone?

<3 you all

HI, KELLY: Yikes! You are ingesting "knockout drops," also known as a "Mickey Finn," which has a very interesting history. Somnote anyone? In the old days, at waterfront bars, "recruiters" would slip chloral hydrate into a fellow's drink. The next day he would wake up far out at sea, sailing for who-knows-where, as the new deck hand! I think they called it "shanghai-ing."

Errrr.....your new Rx is quite potent. If it isn't doing the job for you, could be you need to add some bed time and wakeup time rules to the mixture.

I can certainly identify. My circadian rhythm is broken, and I've been trying for more than 5 years to fix it. Problem is, I think my AD (an SSRI) contributes to the problem by keeping me owl-eyed. So, my night and day are turned around. Also I do the stay-up-for-days not so very cute performance, which always ends with crash and burn. I'm sure tired of those hills and valleys. Believe me, I understand your despair.

Good meds help. Hope the chloral hydrate works for you. Also, in addition to the meds, I've just found a web site I really like that puts a different spin on dreaming, REM sleep, and restorative sleep. It's called "Depression Learning Path." I'm so desperate I'll try anything. I'll even read directions and follow them.

Somnote anyone?
