I was wondering if anyone had stories or information about psych drug induced weight gain. Specifically any methods of losing that weight.
Any information at all would be appreciated. |

There are a lot of psych meds out there that will make one gain weight over time... mine was Zoloft and that is why I stopped taking it - I put on 30 pounds in less than four months when I was on it.
I lost the weight by only eating three healthy meals per day, drinking plenty of water with no soda and walking the lake (three miles) several times a week. |

the only way ive ever been successful in getting weight off is to exercise. at least 4 mile walk 5 days a week or i used to have an elliptical machine---tough but i started out with 15 minutes then 2 15 minute sessions a day & worked up to an hour. as far a my weight gain i dunno if some of it has to do with meds or not doing a regular exercise routine. i do like to eat sweets a lot but when i work out i eat the same amount of sweets & lose weight. with me i think the weight gain is a combination of going on a cocaine binge & neglecting to get my thyroid meds & depression & also i take 3mg klonopin a day along with antivert which can make me lazy if let them. my early in the day doses are offset by coffee but at night after chasing my 18 month old all day (physically & mentally draining to me) & i take my last dose of klonopin i crash into the bed. im very happy to report though im not doing coke anymore got my thyroid levels tested & am back on my med for that. the fatigue & lethargic way i felt with my thyroid so out of whack was unreal. i also take 200mg of zoloft but other than the very first time i started taking it it does not make me sleepy--just keeps up serotonin levels in my brain & evens me out. dunno if any of this was helpful. also i have to limit reg coffee or else im at the other end of the spectrum with tooooo much caffeine & i get auditory hallucinations & so much pent up enery & racing thoughts i feel like im losing my mind. before baby i could just up & go walk it off but now i cant do that so gotta limit the caffeine.

I didn't really gain weight while I was taking meds, it was more like swelling! I was retaining a lot of fluid and literally looked like a balloon, my normal weight is usually between 105 and 110 lbs and during that time I went all the way up to 125 which isn't really bad because some people gain a lot more than that. I tried exercising more than usual but for some reason I wouldn't sweat so my weight wouldn't change. That weight gain is not caused by your diet or because you're not physically active, the truth is, some of those drugs affect your kidney function and make you retain excess water and fat, that is why it is practically impossible to lose that weight for as long as you're taking that substance. I was having a lot of joint and muscle pain along with some other really nasty side effects so I've decided to give up meds completely. One month after I stopped taking that stuff, my weight went right back to normal.

I disagree that drug makers deny it as it is clearly written in their PDR information that is available through your pharmacist or on the internet or in the information given to you by your pharmacist, if weight gain or increased appetite which would cause weight gain is a side effect.
