Has anyone here gone all the way through therapy?
How does it work out?
Is termination awful?
Do you get screwed up attachment issues about the therapist?

I had a thread a while back on people's termination stories. I was looking for people who had terminated amicably with their therapist (not because the T was incompetent or because the T terminated them). I wanted ideas for how it can end well--positive models and visions for me as I get closer to ending therapy. There were some good ideas and stories there. These are distinct from the "flip side" termination stories that people tell where it did not end well (client was terminated with no warning by T, unilaterally, with unresolved feelings, etc.). So I wanted a thread for positive termation stories to inspire me and give me something to reach for. Here is the thread:

We can discuss all about termination issues in the social group. Everyone's termination is different. I've had 2 good terminations, 1 not-so-good, and one I'm still working on that I'm going to make be a good one!

It should NOT be AWFUL and you should not get screwed up, but sometimes it's hard because of the attachment. Sometimes it's not. Leaving people is part of life, so termination is really part of therapy, an important part!
Thanks for this!

I had an amicable termination with my old T. It was fine. I needed her for sure - but I don't think I understood attachment or termination at the time so it wasn't that hard. The last session was a normal chat that ended in an awkward uncomfortable side hug.

Things have changed a lot since I started seeing current T and termination is definitely going to be different. I am very attached. I am moving in 2 months so we have to terminate - I'm not really done with therapy so I think ending is going to be very difficult. I have my last session in 7 weeks so I'll let you know what happens.
