At the end of our session today she hugged me and held onto me real tight and told me I never ever have to feel afraid to tell how I feel about anything and I don't have to feel ashamed either. She said I am safe with her. I did not want her to let me go. It was a difficult session with a great ending. I feel her with me right now. I feel protected. I have know my therapist for so long now that I almost cannot imagine not knowing her and not being able to talk with her. She told me one time that she knows that I will probably always need to have some kind of contact with her and that she is ok with that.

Oh my goodness. She sounds like an amazing, loving t. And she sounds like she cares for you so much. You are very fortunate.

cmac, that is awesome! I'm sorry you had a difficult session, but I'm so glad you have an amazing T!

Question - I know you've been seeing this T for years. How did it come about that she gives you hugs? Did you have to ask for a hug, or did she offer? I'm thinking of asking my T where she stands on giving out hugs.

After many, many years of wishing she would hug me I finally just asked. I was so afraid she would say no but she said "of course don't be afraid to ever ask for what you need". Sometimes they are quick hugs and sometimes longer depending on what I need. She has also let me take a photo of her to have when I am away from her office. She has also written letters for me to hold onto when she is away on vacation which has helped alot. She writes out positive messages to read and to focus on. She is really very open to what will help me out, it's just so hard for me to ask her. I always feel I have to take care of myself alone. She is teaching me that it is ok to ask.
Thanks for this!

Cmac it sounds like a great hug. I'm glad you were able to ask for it and then allowed yourself to accept it in the way you did. Do whatever you can to hang on that feeling, sound very healing to me.
